Jason Voorhees is emerging from Crystal Lake.
A new Peacock series called Crystal Lake, produced by A24, will explore the origins of the Friday the 13th story. The show focuses on Pamela Voorhees (played by Linda Cardellini), the killer from the original 1980 film, before her son Jason became the iconic villain. William Catlett, Devin Kessler, and Cameron Scoggins are also in the cast, with Catlett playing Dorf, a police officer who appeared in the original movie. Callum Vinson, known for his role in Chucky, will play a young Jason Voorhees in a recurring capacity.
Brad Caleb Kane, the creator and showrunner of Crystal Lake, recently gave fans a sneak peek at the new Jason Voorhees. He shared a black and white photo on Instagram – now deleted – showing the actor in make-up, sitting with his back to the camera. The post hinted at a trailer release next week with the ominous message, “News coming. Monday… We’re all doomed.” You can see the full image below.
Since the original post has been removed, it’s uncertain whether news will still be released on Monday, May 11th. If an official announcement happens, Peacock will likely share the first full trailer for the series. The series is expected to premiere before the end of 2026 and will be the first new installment in the Friday the 13th franchise that isn’t a short film in 17 years.
Honestly, I’m still not sure what Jason’s going to be in this new Crystal Lake show. They’re keeping everything super secretive, which is fine, but it also makes it hard to know what to expect. Plus, let’s be real, the Friday the 13th movies themselves weren’t always consistent with Jason’s story, so it’s a little tricky to guess how they’ll handle him this time around.
Problems with the story’s logic appeared right away. The first Friday the 13th film explained Pamela Voorhees’ killings as revenge for her son’s accidental drowning due to careless counselors. However, the sequel, Friday the 13th Part 2, showed Jason as a grown man seeking revenge for his mother’s death, even though he was supposedly already dead from drowning and hadn’t seen her in years. This created a confusing contradiction.
For the most part, the established story of Jason Voorhees remained consistent throughout the films, showing his transformation from a human to an undead killer after being struck by lightning and killed. However, the ninth movie, Jason Goes to Hell, introduced a new and unusual concept: Jason as a demonic creature capable of inhabiting other people. This idea wasn’t carried forward in later films.
Based on early looks at Jason’s makeup for the new series, the creators seem to be working to keep his appearance similar to how he looked when Ari Lehman first played him in the original 1980 film.
This suggests the new season of Crystal Lake might closely follow the original Friday the 13th movies, potentially showing Jason drowning in the lake – as happened in the 1980 film. We’ll likely get a better idea of the story and when it takes place once the trailer is released.
