You’ll Want to Hug Your Family After Watching the Heartwarming Netflix Hit ‘Nonnas’!

As a movie enthusiast, allow me to share a gem that has left an indelible mark on my heart – a film so uplifting, it’s hard to resist its charm. If you haven’t experienced this masterpiece yet, I strongly urge you to rectify that situation without delay. This cinematic treasure is guaranteed to leave you feeling exhilarated and enriched.

For the Netflix lineup in 2025, there’s an abundance of fantastic films set for release this year, many of which are included in our broader 2025 film calendar. However, amidst the diverse array of genres, there are times when we long for a movie that simply uplifts our spirits.

As someone who regards my Netflix subscription as equally important as a Friday night pizza date, I’ve got a film recommendation for you – one that I stumbled upon just a few weeks back and found quite intriguing!

Netflix Always Has Some Great Movies, But They’re Oftentimes Forgettable

So, let’s be honest here – Netflix can make forgettable movies. Like, a lot.

The top-rated Netflix movies have proven their staying power by becoming blockbusters or timeless favorites on the streaming service. For instance, we might discuss “The Irishman” and its numerous Academy Award nominations, or other films that also received such recognition – such as “Roma”, “Marriage Story”; the list continues to grow.

We could also discuss films that didn’t receive extensive critical acclaim but still managed to thrive. Some of these have even spawned sequels, such as the growing Enola Holmes series, with the third installment currently in production, and The Christmas Chronicles, which has a sequel and showcases one of my favorite cinematic Santas.

While there’s an abundance of films available on this platform, many tend to slip our memory rather swiftly. They might be worthwhile, but more often than not, they don’t leave a lasting impression. Titles like “The Life List” (which was decent enough, though not particularly outstanding), “Irish Wish, Carry-On, ” and countless others—once popular, now largely overlooked within days or weeks after their initial release.

They’re okay, but they don’t stand out much. However, the movie I recently watched was unique and heartwarming, and I believe it appeals to everyone.

Nonnas, However, Was The First That I Could See Myself Rewatching

The recently released Netflix movie titled “Nonnas” is inspired by a true event, leaving viewers either craving for food or tempted to dine at the restaurant that serves as its backdrop after watching it.

The movie revolves around Joe, a man mourning the loss of his mother. In her memory, he plans to establish a restaurant on Staten Island that gives Italian grandmothers, known for their exceptional culinary skills, an opportunity to work as chefs.

To put it simply, I must confess that my fondness for this film might be slightly influenced by my deep-rooted love for cooking. Over time, this hobby has blossomed into a genuine passion, and as a result, I’m particularly drawn to any movie that features food in some capacity. Therefore, I can’t help but suggest it wholeheartedly.

However, there’s an undeniable charm about Nonnas that makes it hard not to watch it again. For the first time in a while, I find myself truly relating to the characters because they seem like real people I might encounter in my everyday life or at a family gathering. It has an authenticity that is truly captivating.

It’s All About Family And How To Deal With Grief

In “Nonnas,” food serves as a central element binding all characters and the narrative, yet the underlying theme revolves around coping with loss, familial bonds, and where these two intersect. Joe, who lost his mother, is opening Entoca Maria to pay tribute to her, but each nonna he hires carries their own stories of family strife or personal loss.

They demonstrate grief in various forms, from strained relationships with their kids to embracing their identity. Over time, they’ve found ways to cope, a fact that stirs admiration for their fortitude, adaptability, and the audacity to undertake something entirely new at this stage of their lives.

Joe finds inspiration in them, and it gives him courage. He stands firm as much as possible, knowing they would never yield. It’s a trait about them that I find truly endearing.

It’s Also A Love Letter To The Grandmothers That Inspired Us

One heartwarming factor about this is that it transcends being merely about meals, kinship, and sorrow; it also honors the trailblazing women who’ve laid the path for us.

Previously mentioned, I have a strong fondness for food. From suggesting top-notch cooking shows to repeatedly urging you to rewatch “Chef”, any media centered around delicious cuisine is bound to capture my heart.

The matriarchs I encountered stirred within me the very reason I cherish culinary arts – an appreciation nurtured by the powerful females who paved my path. They ignited in me the courage not only to wield a knife in the kitchen for vegetable chopping, but also to navigate life’s challenges with resilience and determination. Not every slice is perfect, yet when combined with love in the pot, it yields something magnificent – each perceived error merges seamlessly with your successes, forming a masterpiece.

The strong women who preceded me have shaped my identity today. They ignited my passions and urged me to pursue my dreams. This movie serves as a powerful reminder of their impact—though we may belong to different eras, they are the constant companions who encourage us, applaud our efforts, and motivate us to strive for excellence. And that’s truly captivating.

It’s The Kind Of Film That Doesn’t Just Make You Want To Call Your Mom – You Want To Visit Her

I’ve mentioned my mother a few times on TopMob, as we share a special bond over our mutual love for movies. This particular conversation made me yearn to see her in person – not just speak on the phone, but spend time with her to express my gratitude for all she’s done for me and acknowledge the inspiration she’s been. After all, the essence of Nonnas lies in cherishing these meaningful connections.

Indeed, I’m incredibly blessed to have the loving family that I do, but this film consistently serves as a gentle reminder not to overlook this blessing. It anchors us in the real world and subtly encourages viewers to appreciate the precious moments spent with our nearest and dearest, for we never truly know when those moments might be lost.

This film isn’t just entertaining, it also tugs at your heartstrings and leaves you yearning for a cozy gathering with your loved ones, perhaps even your grandmother, around the kitchen table.

Nonnas is available on Netflix, so please go and watch it. You won’t regret it.
