As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say it’s always a breath of fresh air when publishers decide to streamline their processes and simplify the gaming experience for us, the players. The removal of the 2K launcher from Steam games is just such an instance that brings a smile to my face.
2K games have now become simpler to start directly from your Steam library, as the publisher has officially taken down its launcher for all Steam (and Epic Games Store) games. This change took effect on November 18, with an additional update on November 25 to confirm that the Launcher was completely removed.
Instead of opening separately via their respective launchers, several games such as Bioshock Remastered, Marvel’s Midnight Suns, and The Quarry, will now be launched directly through Steam. Previously, other games used launchers for additional features; these games will now present a small menu before starting the game itself.
For example, XCOM 2 and XCOM: Chimera Squad used the 2K launcher for mod management. Now, launching the game will open a small menu which will let you open the mod launcher or the selected game directly. For both games, this change lets you install and use mods on Steam Deck, though the Chimera Squad menu may have some graphical and interface glitches on the portable device.
Some files from the launcher may remain. The 2K launcher folder has been replaced with a text file entitled 2kLauncherRemoved.txt, which can be safely deleted. You can also search for remaining files in your Windows search bar with the following text: “%localappdata%\T2GP Launcher” and “%appdata%\T2GP Launcher.” You can find a more detailed tutorial for deleting the launcher’s files on the 2K support site.
This announcement comes after we’ve confirmed that Civilization 7 won’t necessitate the 2K launcher. Moreover, speculations suggest that the publisher might secretly be developing a reboot, potential candidates being Bioshock or Spec Ops: The Line.
