As a seasoned movie critic with a lifetime of experiences under my belt, I must say that Daughters is a truly moving and poignant documentary that beautifully captures the complexities of father-daughter relationships. The film’s focus on the human elements rather than the logistics sets it apart from other prison documentaries. It’s like a breath of fresh air, reminding us that beyond the cold walls of prisons lie stories of love, hope, and the indomitable bond between fathers and daughters.
In this first-person perspective, I’d say: “I recently had the privilege of watching the captivating Netflix documentary titled ‘Daughters,’ masterfully directed by Angela Patton and Natalie Rae. This film beautifully demonstrates how sensitive and skillful storytelling can elevate a subject to new heights. The documentary focuses on an extraordinary event – a father-daughter dance held within a Washington, D.C., prison between inmates and their daughters, ranging from 5 to their mid-teens. This heartwarming initiative was first initiated by co-director Patton herself back in 2012, and has since grown. Its purpose is to create a unique opportunity for these young girls and their incarcerated fathers, many of whom have been separated for years, to connect in person.
In this documentary titled “Daughters“, I find myself tagging along with a group of young ladies and their fathers, who are preparing for an upcoming dance. The incarcerated men must undergo a ten-week program, where they meet with Chad Morris, a life coach, to help them navigate the heartrending, surreal journey that awaits them. He warns them, “It’s going to be an emotional roller coaster. You’ll feel elation during the dance, but as the clock counts down to the end, you’ll experience a variety of emotions.”
Instead of focusing on the administrative aspects and logistics of organizing the father-daughter dance, Daughters concentrates on the emotional heart of the story, portraying the nervous anticipation and preparation of the girls and their fathers as they eagerly await the special event. The filmmakers deliberately avoid discussing what these men were imprisoned for, and the documentary provides only limited insight into their daily prison lives. Instead, it reflects the daughters’ perspective of their fathers as caregivers. This human focus reaches its peak during the dance itself, where touching moments include the girls’ uncertainty about recognizing their fathers. (Spoiler alert: They do.) Throughout the narrative, we witness poignant snapshots such as the fathers learning to tie a tie or Patton informing them that her own 80-year-old grandfather is polishing their shoes for the dance. Following the event, we see piles of shoes, ties, and belts on the floor, along with quick glimpses of the fathers exiting in their orange jumpsuits.
In the closing part of the movie, it’s revealed that what we’ve been watching is actually a long-term documentary titled “Daughters.” The events depicted took place in 2019, and since then, these girls and their fathers have lived through additional years. Relationships and perspectives have evolved, as have the sentences for some fathers who are now trying to rebuild their lives. Others have moved deeper into the prison system, making visits with family a rarity. The most poignant scenes, however, aren’t due to dramatic twists or emotional outbursts, but because they highlight the film’s central theme: Time is our most valuable resource.
