As a follower, I’m excited to share that Lucasfilm has shed light on an upcoming project, a movie currently being crafted by the talented director behind “Stranger Things,” Matt Duffer. This film, set to hit cinemas in 2027, will feature Ryan Gosling and is said to be a significant addition to the Star Wars universe. At this year’s Star Wars Celebration, Kathleen Kennedy explained why Duffer was the ideal choice for directing a Star Wars movie in this new phase of the almost half-century-old franchise.
According to numerous fans, the Star Wars franchise has been struggling for years or even decades, with some going as far as suggesting that all content outside of the original trilogy should be erased. However, Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm, sees a bright future filled with ambitious and risky projects to reinvent what Star Wars can become. One key component of this new vision is Levy’s upcoming movie, with Kennedy stating that Levy, known for directing Deadpool and Wolverine, is an ideal director to guide the saga into uncharted territories. Kennedy shared this sentiment with ScreenRant.
This guy possesses an exceptional wit and zest for life, not to mention a deep-rooted passion for Star Wars. He’s been eager to embark on this project for ages, as we chatted about it in 2022, but our conversations actually go back further than that. In the meantime, he got hooked on Stranger Things, which temporarily absorbed his attention. However, he’s had this Star Wars story idea brewing in his mind for quite some time, and I believe it’s been a lifelong dream of his to contribute to the Star Wars universe.
Ryan Gosling’s Casting Was Always Part of the ‘Starfighter’ Deal
Speculation has been swirling for several weeks about Ryan Gosling potentially appearing in a Star Wars movie, yet it appears that his role in Levy’s film had already been finalized since the early discussions about the project. Kennedy further clarified:
From the get-go, Sean frequently brought up Ryan during their discussions. As he worked on this project, Ryan was always at the forefront of his thoughts. The challenges with Star Wars are immense, as everyone is eager for information and rumors spread quickly. It was amusing to observe Sean subtly set up a conversation about Ryan, considering there’s no end to the swirling rumors–some truthful, some not. To put it simply, our approach is to disregard all speculation and focus solely on facts. In essence, we only discuss what we know for certain and avoid dwelling on unverified assumptions. This sums up our approach.
One of several Star Wars films currently in production is titled “Starfighter”. In 2026, Jon Favreau will introduce “The Mandalorian & Grogu” to moviegoers, followed by “Starfighter” in 2027. Additionally, Taika Waititi’s film is progressing steadily and is still being developed, while James Mangold plans to release his “Dawn of the Jedi” movie in the near future. These are merely a few examples of upcoming Star Wars films; it appears that we can expect to see more Star Wars on the big screen in a major way, with numerous projects in various stages of production.
