You Won’t Believe Why Abby is OBSESSED with Killing Joel

In The Last of Us Season 2, Abby harbors intense anger towards Joel. During the premiere, she swears that when she encounters him again, she will take his life in a prolonged and painful manner – but what’s the reason behind this animosity?

Ah, let me take you back to the nail-biting conclusion of Season 1. Joel and Ellie rolled into the Fireflies’ Salt Lake City hospital. Marlene, our trusted leader, dropped a bombshell – the operation to craft a vaccine from Ellie’s immunity meant her death.

Due to his unwillingness to accept the situation, Joel ended up killing nearly everyone at the hospital, which included the surgeon scheduled for an operation and Marlene, afterwards he escaped with Ellie to Jackson.

At the outset of The Last of Us Season 2, it’s evident that Abby seeks vengeance; however, her loss and the reason for her intense anger compared to others aren’t immediately disclosed.

Why Abby wants to kill Joel in The Last of Us

If the series unfolds as the competitions go, Abby seeks vengeance against Joel since he ended up killing her father, who happened to be a doctor at the hospital.

In the initial episode of Season 2, Abby, Owen, and their companions are found close to the burial sites of individuals that Joel had killed in the previous season. It’s evident that Abby has suffered a significant loss, as she initially resists joining a new group (such as Isaac and the WLF), insisting on finding Joel first.

Abby expresses her frustration by saying, ‘None of this seems just,’ before fastening a Firefly trinket onto one of the crosses. ‘When we take his life, let it be a prolonged one,’ she resolves.

In part two, Abby’s father, named Jerry, held the role of chief medical officer within the Fireflies group, dedicated to developing a remedy for the Cordyceps disease outbreak.

In the game, it’s him who tells Marlene that Ellie’s death is necessary for the cure, a truth he thinks justifies the sacrifice. However, even though he believes this, Abby consoles him. Sadly, all their efforts were in vain as Joel ended up killing Jerry.

In conversation with TV Line, Kaitlyn Dever (the actress portraying Abby) hinted: “Grief after losing someone dear is a powerful, overpowering emotion. I’m not sure about her beliefs, specifically, but I can empathize when one is left with emptiness… how does one cope with this and what forms might the aftermath take?

“With her, she wants revenge and she thinks revenge is the only way she’ll feel better.”
