Well, well, well, it seems the tables have turned, and the tables have brought along a nice plate of humble pie. A mysterious group, claiming to hail from the scenic streets of Prague, has seemingly managed to hijack LockBit’s oh-so-secure dark web panel, and – wait for it – leaked sensitive data. Among the treasures discovered: internal systems, Bitcoin wallets, and more data than one could reasonably expect from a ransomware gang. It’s almost like the hackers got hacked. Talk about poetic justice.
LockBit, that dreadfully infamous band of digital hooligans, has found itself at the receiving end of a cyber attack, all courtesy of a group that fancies itself as Prague’s finest. And rather than simply steal the treasure, they’ve left a cheeky little message mocking LockBit. Oh, the irony.
According to a blog post from the esteemed blockchain security firm, SlowMist, the leaked data package contains over 60,000 Bitcoin addresses, 75 user credentials, and, believe it or not, ransom negotiation logs. One rather amusing record even hints at a ransom payment originating from a Coinbase account. It’s almost as if the hackers were using a digital “I Owe You” slip from the local coffee shop.
The attackers, who are evidently no strangers to the finer details of hacking, also gained access to a lightweight PHP-based management platform used by the good folks at LockBit. What a treat for them, huh?
“[…] we speculate that the hacker from ‘Prague’ likely exploited a PHP 0-day or 1-day vulnerability to compromise the web backend and management console.”
— SlowMist
LockBit, of course, responded in its usual manner – this time in Russian, no less. When asked whether they’d been “pwned,” they assured the world that “only the lightweight panel with an authorization code was breached.” To further soothe our worried hearts, they claimed, “no decryptors were stolen, and no company data was affected.” Phew, what a relief. It’s like losing your wallet but still having your sunglasses on. What a close call!
And the cherry on this very bitter cake? When asked if this hack might tarnish their reputation, LockBit admitted that yes, it indeed “affects” their reputation. But don’t worry, dear readers, they assured us that the source code “was not stolen” and that they are “already working on recovery.” In a final twist of delicious irony, LockBit is now offering a bounty for information on the hacker. Yes, that’s right: the same LockBit that was previously the subject of a $15 million U.S. government reward for information on their members. Truly, the circle of cyber life is a strange one.
