At the moment of this writing, the Minecraft movie has raked in more than $430 million at the box office, and it continues to be a theater sensation that draws crowds of people eager to watch it – and often rewatch it. It’s no wonder then, that a follow-up film is already in the works.
A significant factor contributing to the success of the Minecraft movie lies in its theater screening, where audiences are engaged and enthusiastic. The response varies depending on the showing, with viewers often howling, laughing, and cheering throughout. This interactive experience might explain why it thrived, even amidst negative critical reviews.
Instead of asking if Warner Bros. can duplicate their success again, it appears we’ll find out soon whether they can do so in another attempt.
During an interview with Deadline, Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, the co-chiefs and CEOs of Warner Bros., revealed that they are actively preparing for the production of a sequel.
A Minecraft movie sequel is already planned
Even though the film hasn’t started production as of now, the two main actors from Warner Bros are determined to bring it to life and take full advantage of the excitement surrounding it.
Soon, even though the contracts haven’t been fully signed, De Luca hinted that a potential deal is on the horizon. They’re not debating whether it will happen, but rather when.
Nevertheless, it’s important to note that this sequel might require some time, as it hinges on the duration of contract renegotiations for the film rights. Previously, the urgency to produce a Minecraft movie stemmed from the impending loss of rights to do so.
In one of our initial discussions with producer Roy Lee, we discovered that the rights were near expiration. He spoke to us about Minecraft, which sparked our interest. We delved deeper into it, read it, and became enthusiastic. It was clear to us that Jesse Ehrman, along with Legendary, had been striving for this project for years. And so, we collectively decided to produce the movie.
Regardless of whether they’ve started planning another installment, it’s challenging to predict exactly when it will be completed and even more so, to secure the necessary rights for a repeat performance.
Moreover, it’s challenging to determine if this movie captures the essence of a unique phenomenon, like lightning in a bottle. Due to the widespread popularity of the Chicken Jockey meme, some cinemas have had to issue warnings to viewers to prevent them from spilling popcorn during the screening.

Could we possibly witness a repeat performance of this act, or is there another instance like the Chicken Jockey incident in store for us? I guess it’s uncertain; it can be quite challenging to predict.
It’s undeniable that the Minecraft movie has taken everyone by surprise as it turned out to be a massive success. Its influence, both favorable and unfavorable, has left a permanent mark on cinema culture. This blockbuster could very well set the stage for a new era in audience expectations when they visit a theater.
