Sony is testing out AI technology that allows players to engage in dialogues with video game characters from the PlayStation series, such as Aloy from Horizon.
For a while now, the impact and role of Artificial Intelligence on creativity within the gaming world has been a significant point of discussion. Companies such as Sony (PlayStation) have delved deeply into this topic.
In a BBC interview, Hermen Hulst, the CEO of PlayStation’s Studio Business Group, foresaw the possibility of a twofold interest in gaming emerging. This could involve an appetite for games driven by artificial intelligence and innovation on one side, and a continued desire for meticulously crafted content on the other.
In addition, patents indicate Sony’s intent to integrate AI technology into features enhancing daily life, as evidenced by a filing in February 2025 that outlines an AI assistant. This assistant would offer players in-game advice through characters such as Aloy from Horizon Forbidden West. Recently, a video has emerged, providing insights into what this integration will encompass.
PlayStation takes next step with AI experiments
A confidential informant provided The Verge with a video as evidence that Sony is testing AI-controlled characters for the PlayStation, which was initially posted on YouTube but later had its copyright claimed.
In simpler terms, Sharwin Raghoebardajal, who’s the Director of Software Engineering at SIE, explains a video produced by PlayStation Studios Advanced Technology Group. This video is actually a demonstration of an AI-driven Aloy character engaging in conversation with Raghoebardajal himself.
In the video at some point, Raghoebardajal inquires about my feelings, and I respond using voice and facial expressions generated by advanced AI technology. The AI-generated version of me proceeds to divulge a bit about my past, revealing that I am a clone of Elisabet Sobeck.
In addition to being tested in Horizon Forbidden West, it is also demonstrated that this feature functions in the game. Towards the end of the video, Raghoebardajal queries Aloy’s in-game character about her current location. A moment later, the AI controlled by Aloy replies: “We are currently at the Scalding Spear, a desert settlement famous for its magnificent merchant shops…
Raghoebardajal points out that the technology, jointly developed by Guerrilla Games (Horizon’s creator) and himself, is being utilized within Sony for showcasing its diverse features internally.
In 2024, The Technology Group unveiled the initial version of their tech demonstration during GDC. Later in December, they presented it privately at STEF (the Sony technology event held in Tokyo). It’s worth noting that the video you see here is an enhanced version of the demo.
As a devoted admirer, let me share with you that Raghoebardajal mentioned something intriguing about the video. It’s not intended to address the debate on whether or when we should interact with Aloy in-game; instead, it offers a tantalizing “peek at potentialities.
