Under the guidance of director David Yarovesky and producer Sam Raimi, we have “Locked”, a gripping, high-stakes action thriller. This film stars Bill Skarsgård, known for his diligent work, and the incomparable Anthony Hopkins, who effortlessly shines. “Locked” is an English adaptation of Mariano Cohn’s 2019 Argentinian movie “4×4”. Filmed in Vancouver, Canada, it beautifully incorporates a vibrant urban atmosphere that significantly contributes to the narrative.
In simpler terms, Alexander Skarsgård portrays Eddie Barrish, a struggling petty thief who finds himself in a tricky situation due to poor decisions. Eddie is cash-strapped and needs $475 urgently to free his rundown vehicle from the garage. As a result, he resorts to stealing wallets, buying lottery tickets, and breaking into cars. To add to his troubles, he’s been neglecting his ex-wife and their young daughter, Sarah (Ashley Cartwright).

As Eddie strolls along a largely deserted alleyway parking lot, his eyes fall upon a sleek black SUV bearing the label “Dolus”. Upon checking the door, he finds it unfastened. Slipping inside undetected, he starts searching for valuables to sell but comes up empty-handed. When he goes to exit, he realizes the doors are securely locked. He then tries breaking the windows, only to find they remain intact. Finding himself unable to contact anyone due to a lack of cell signal and the vehicle’s soundproofing preventing him from crying out for assistance, Eddie finally acknowledges his predicament: he is trapped.
In a state of panic due to his unexpected predicament, Eddie’s phone in the vehicle rings. On the other side is an elderly man identified as William (Hopkins). Their conversation turns confrontational, with William asserting control. He monitors his trapped victim via six built-in cameras, startling Eddie with electric shocks whenever he steps out of line. William goes so far as to torment Eddie using extreme temperatures, loud polka music, and other unnerving tactics.

What‘s the reason behind William performing these actions? It would be more enlightening if you discover it yourself, but it seems to be a twisted game driven by his unique perception of justice, rooted in sociopathy. As William and Eddie engage in their private discussions, they reveal aspects of themselves – their histories, situations, and even their underlying reasons. However, some dialogues appear contrived, like one exchange that swiftly escalates into overt political discourse. Yet, the majority of these exchanges contribute to the film’s chilling climax, which unfolds once the sophisticated high-tech SUV takes to the streets.
Despite the questionable foundation of its plot, “Locked” is propelled by the unwavering dedication of Skarsgård and Hopkins. Together, they strive tirelessly to keep the narrative engaging, as the film grapples with filling its brief 95-minute runtime. Though a sluggish middle section momentarily dulls the pace, “Locked” offers enough substance in this gritty two-person drama to maintain your curiosity. “Locked” will be in theaters starting March 21st.
