Following the conclusion of The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 2, some viewers might find themselves pondering whether – and maybe even wishing – Abby meets her demise in the game. If you’re someone who enjoys a good spoiler, then this is the perfect spot for you.
In the first season, when Joel protected Ellie from the Fireflies, resulting in numerous deaths (including Marlene and a physician who could have created a cure), he set his future in stone. In the opening episode, Abby vowed to avenge this act by killing him gradually; by the second episode, she carries out her threat.
In this harrowing moment, Ellie is pinned down, compelled to witness the slow drain of life from Joel’s eyes, stained with blood. After committing this act, Abby and her companions make a swift exit, thus ensuring that Ellie survives and establishes the primary narrative for Season 2.
As a gamer who delved into the gripping world of The Last of Us Part 2, you’d be well aware that Abby’s fate was a topic on everyone’s lips. But there’ll be plenty who’ve only caught the series – meaning they missed out on her storyline. Brace yourself, because if you haven’t played the game yet, what I’m about to say is going to spoil it all!
Does Abby die in The Last of Us?
In The Last of Us series, it’s not Abby who perishes. Instead, a twist that might astound you: Ellie is the one who rescues her life, choosing in the end to release her.
In Part 2 (and likely Season 2), Joel’s demise propels Ellie into a relentless quest for vengeance. She journeys to Seattle in search of Abby, but after slaying two of her companions, their encounter at Abby’s hideout ensues. They clash, and Abby nearly kills Dina, but Lev (an outcast Seraphite whom she befriends later in the narrative) intervenes, and they both depart.
Several months have passed, and Tommy discloses that he has found Abby. Moved by this news, Ellie decides to look for her despite Dina’s objections. She eventually locates her in Santa Barbara, a city where she was taken captive and brutally tortured by the Rattlers, a group similar to the Proud Boys. They had left her hanging from “pillars”, which were essentially wooden beams used to leave people to perish due to exposure to harsh weather conditions.
In the end, Ellie also gets captured, yet she manages to break free (leaving some Rattlers dead in her wake), eventually reaching the pillars where she sets Abby and Lev free. Abby guides her towards two boats for their escape, but Ellie isn’t quite ready to part ways. “I can’t let you go,” she states.
At first, Abby resists engaging in a fight with her, but Ellie compels her action by threatening Lev with a knife. They engage in a physical altercation, but as Ellie is on the verge of drowning her, she catches a glimpse of Joel seated on the porch in her mind’s eye. Tearfully, Ellie instructs Abby to take Lev and depart, and she vanishes into the fog, not appearing again (until The Last of Us Part 3, naturally).
Abby nearly died in the original version of The Last of Us Part 2
According to Neil Druckmann, Abby died in the first draft of The Last of Us Part 2.
In my gaming journey, during a behind-the-scenes chat about The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, Druckmann shared an interesting tidbit: “Initially, it seemed like both Yara and Lev had perished, leaving Abby alone when you reconnect with her. Then, Ellie takes Abby down.
Halley Gross, one of the game’s writers, emphasized the significance of preserving in Ellie “3% of the humanity she inherited…that resilient spirit, that determined child that Joel played a crucial role in nurturing.
“I think if she killed Abby, you would never see that kid again,” she added.
In the initial draft of The Last of Us Part II, Abby’s character was meant to meet a different fate. Originally, Ellie was supposed to end Abby’s life by drowning her in water.

During an interview with IndieWire, Druckmann shared that for over half of the production process, Ellie was initially intended to kill Abby in the finale. This alternate ending would’ve given a unique vibe and required another character to intervene and halt the cycle of violence.
During our discussions about Yara and Lev, we found that portraying Ellie in such a manner didn’t seem authentic. Beneath the surface, there’s something good about her. I hope she can move on and construct a fulfilling life for herself.
Ensure you’re aware of when the next season of The Last of Us, season 2, will be released, delve into Dina’s destiny within the video game series, and uncover why Eugene plays a crucial role in season 2.
