After almost a decade of keeping viewers on the edge of their seats, Gavin O’Connor is once again sitting in the director’s chair for The Accountant 2. Renowned for the sports drama ‘Warrior’ and Ben Affleck’s drama ‘The Way Back’, O’Connor has long been pursuing a sequel to his and Affleck’s successful thriller, co-writing the script with Bill Dubuque. Despite facing delays due to internal changes at Warner Bros., they were able to persuade the studio to let them shop it around, eventually finding a home at Amazon MGM Studios.
As a seasoned movie critic, I eagerly anticipate stepping back into the world of “The Accountant 2,” where I’ll reunite with Ben Affleck as the enigmatic Christian Wolff. This time, he teams up once more with director Bill Dubuque, Jon Bernthal, J.K. Simmons, and Cynthia Addai-Robinson for another thrilling chapter in this intricate universe.
In this new installment, I find myself drawn into a captivating tale where Christian Wolff is called upon by Marybeth, portrayed by Addai-Robinson, to assist in probing the demise of someone close to her heart. Along the way, Jon Bernthal’s character, Brax, joins our protagonist on this perilous journey.
As they edge closer to the elusive assassin they suspect orchestrated the murder, Christian and Brax find themselves not only pursuing justice but also reflecting upon their tumultuous past and striving to mend their fractured relationship. The Accountant 2 promises a gripping tale of vengeance, self-discovery, and redemption that I simply cannot wait to experience!
To celebrate the premiere of the movie, ScreenRant had a chat with Gavin O’Connor about The Accountant 2. During this conversation, the director shared why a particular scene between Affleck and Bernthal held special significance for him, and how the actors added their own improvisations to make it even more impactful. Additionally, he addressed rumors of an Accountant TV series and provided some insights into whether it had any influence on the much-anticipated sequel.
Christian & Brax’s Airstream Scene Is One Of Accountant 2’s Most Important Scenes For O’Connor
Affleck & Bernthal Also Improvised Some Of Its Best Moments
In the first movie, there was lots of setup for their difficult past, but some viewers felt let down because Affleck and Bernthal didn’t interact much until the end. When it was announced that The Accountant 2 would focus on them rebuilding their relationship, fans of the original were even more excited, especially since the previews suggested a comedic partnership between them in the second film.
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but reminisce about the sheer joy I had during the filmmaking process, particularly when it came to fleshing out Christian and Brax’s unique relationship. Frankly, I adored every moment where they shared screen time together. When prompted to pick my favorite scene to piece together, I found myself pointing towards the one where they perch atop the Airstream. This scene, a clever blend of familial dysfunction and heartfelt drama, stood out for me as it encapsulated the essence of their complex bond perfectly.
In a hearty chuckle, O’Connor shared his affection for the concept of two men perched atop an Airstream trailer. However, he admitted that executing this idea proved tricky due to the impracticality of fitting chairs on the Airstream. Nonetheless, he was smitten by the tranquility portrayed in the scene where the two brothers sat together, attempting to mend their relationship issues through conversation. Interestingly, there was no musical score in this scene; it was merely a heartfelt dialogue between the siblings.
During a more solemn scene, O’Connor mentioned that there was a lot of “spontaneous acting” encouraged between Affleck and Bernthal. However, most of it ended up being quite similar to what was originally scripted. One instance where improvisation took place was when Brax, portrayed by Bernthal, snatched the sunscreen from Christian as he tried to apply it to his legs, discarded it, and this led to laughter and an invitation for a dance before the scene concluded.
Fun fact! While filming that particular scene, I opted for an unconventional approach by keeping cameras trained on both Ben and Jon concurrently. Usually, I don’t do this, but for this scene, I wanted to capture their reactions in sync. However, Ben’s response to the throw took me by surprise – it was a spontaneous reaction that wasn’t anticipated, and it hit the mark perfectly, like a bullseye!
The Accountant TV Show Is Still A Hope For O’Connor
“That’s A Whole Separate World…”
There was speculation in the lengthy gap between the release of “The Accountant 2” that the series might branch out into a TV show. However, there was always uncertainty as to whether this meant the TV show would serve as a sequel or tell a separate story. When questioned about it, O’Connor admitted that he and Dubuque have devised plans for an “Accountant” TV series. Importantly, this series will not revolve around Affleck’s character but instead will explore a broader universe populated by similar characters.
O’Connor made it clear that the series they are planning isn’t featuring Ben. The series, which revolves around Justine and her colleagues at Harbor Neuroscience, is a separate entity. While Ben might make occasional appearances for cameos, he’s part of an entirely different world of accountants. This movie idea doesn’t overlap with the TV concept in any way.
