I was taken aback by the unexpected cancellation of Star Trek: Discovery, and initially, we were all thankful when Paramount+ granted additional time to wrap up all the storylines gracefully. However, after learning that Sonequa Martin-Green and others behind the scenes wanted to bring the series to a close with a movie, I find myself wishing we had been given that opportunity instead.
At TrekTalks 4, Tamia Harper, host of Syfy Sistas, moderated a discussion with cast members from “Star Trek: Discovery.” It was unexpectedly revealed that Alex Kurtzman and showrunner Michelle Paradise had initially envisioned a finale for the series that deviated from the Burnham-focused conclusion we witnessed. Here’s a glimpse of what she disclosed:
From the instant we learned that the series was concluding and negotiations with Paramount Plus were underway for a proper conclusion, they requested an extra episode to truly resonate with each character’s story and provide a fitting ending. Unfortunately, we couldn’t accommodate this request. Initially, Alex [Kurtzman] and Michelle [Paradise] may have envisioned a two-hour movie finale, but that idea was scrapped due to limitations.
The creators of Star Trek: Discovery requested additional time to wrap up the series, but Paramount+ remained firm on their limitations. In the end, most of the cast and crew gathered for a lengthy shoot spanning three days, striving to conclude the story under the circumstances.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but wonder if there could possibly be an additional segment to satisfy my cravings for more. Alas, it seems we won’t be granted that luxury. But is it too much to ask for perhaps a slightly extended installment instead?
It’s important to note that “Discovery” had completed Season 5 before its sudden cancellation. This unexpected turn of events took even Doug Jones by surprise, as he learned about it on a fan cruise. Despite the situation ultimately working out reasonably well, Sonequa Martin-Green couldn’t help but feel a sense of disappointment over the limited opportunities they were provided.
In simpler terms, they wound up with approximately 12 pages, folded it up into 12 pages, didn’t it? It seems like that’s the length of the coda. I don’t think it could have been any more than that. To me, it felt quite short…I recall being quite disappointed when I discovered this because it drastically reduced our choices for what we could explore during that brief span of time.
It was unfortunate that Star Trek: Discovery had to conclude in that manner, but, as Alex Kurtzman noted, the show had an extraordinary journey. Originally, series in this franchise used to last more than 100 episodes, but times have evolved. Even the most popular shows on streaming platforms haven’t run as long as many hit shows from the ’80s and ’90s, so it’s impressive that it made it to five seasons.
More On Star Trek: Discovery

Starfleet Academy has completed filming for its first season, yet a significant question arises after observing the stars’ social media posts.
As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I can’t help but ponder over an alternate universe where ‘Discovery’ concluded with a two-hour cinematic masterpiece instead of a series. Oh, how captivating that would have been for us fans! However, having read the reviews for ‘Star Trek: Section 31’, perhaps Sonequa Martin-Green can find solace in the fact that nobody attempted to wrap up the series with a feature film.
It’s intriguing to me why Sonequa Martin-Green is speaking more openly about this recent news compared to when Star Trek: Discovery initially concluded. Maybe she chose to preserve the show’s dignity, avoiding overshadowing the ending that fans experienced, or perhaps she was hopeful for a spinoff or two, believing additional stories could compensate for that ending. Regardless of the reason, I’m grateful for her disclosure now, as it reveals the efforts made by Kurtzman and others on behalf of the fans, even though their endeavors were ultimately fruitless.
