Heed this notice: Spoilers lie ahead for Doctor Who season 15, episode 2 titled “Lux.” The antagonist in this episode, Mr. Ring-a-Ding/Lux Imperator, played by Alan Cumming, makes a surprising entrance that links the episode’s titular character to the main protagonist. At first glance, he appears as an ordinary animated being who has sprung to life. However, it is soon disclosed that he belongs to Doctor Who’s Pantheon as the God of Light, which adds a fascinating twist to his introduction.
At the finale of “Lux,” it’s uncertain if Cumming’s character might reappear. Given that other Pantheon members have shown signs of defeat only to resurface later, such as Sutekh (Gabriel Woolf), there’s a strong possibility that he could return in the future. Lux possesses an extraordinary power to control light, making his abilities incredibly versatile and terrifyingly potent. There are striking resemblances between the Doctor and Lux, and a seemingly insignificant object introduced at the start of “Lux” underscores this connection even more profoundly.
Doctor Who Season 15’s Lux Uses One Of The Doctor’s Trademarks For Evil
Spoons have saved the day in the Doctor’s hands
At first, Lux exists without a physical form, traveling along a stream of moonlight. Upon entering through the skylight in the Palazzo, the moonbeam bounces off an overlooked spoon left by the projectionist at the movie theater. After some skillfully calculated refractions, Lux adopts the character’s form from the Mr. Ring-a-Ding footage. This spoon is significant because it represents the Doctor, as he has employed this utensil on numerous occasions throughout the series to turn the tide in their favor.
The Doctor typically avoids using traditional weapons and seldom even touches them. Instead, he often resorts to whatever is at hand, and on several occasions, an item as harmless as a spoon has subtly conveyed the Time Lord’s commitment to peace through non-violent means. Consequently, by incorporating a spoon into Lux’s debut, the Light God tarnishes one of the Doctor’s distinctive emblems.
Does The Spoon Confirm A Larger Connection Between The Doctor & The Pantheon?
Gatwa’s Doctor has shown signs of being a Pantheon member
Lux and the Doctor are both incredibly potent entities, and it’s one of the most substantial revelations in “Lux” that Cumming’s character can harness Fifteen’s regeneration energy to construct a more robust body. Now, I’m not claiming that Lux is a Time Lord, but there’s certainly room for speculation that the Doctor might be a Pantheon deity who isn’t aware of it. Considering the Doctor had his memories erased by Division prior to William Hartnell’s First Doctor, and after Chris Chibnall’s Timeless Child retcon, we still don’t know the character’s true origin.
The spoon might simply have ended up there by chance, but it might also symbolize something much deeper. I suspect if there is any connection at all, it was placed there deliberately by someone else in the Pantheon, possibly as a playful nod to the Doctor’s past, trying to get a reaction out of him. Given that Doctor Who has taken on more supernatural elements during its Disney era, it’s also possible that other explanations might diverge from the show’s traditional sci-fi narrative.
