You Season 6 Will Never Happen

With the arrival of You Season 5 on Netflix, discussions are swirling around whether Penn Badgley will reprise his role as Joe Goldberg for one final appearance. However, if you’re eagerly anticipating a potential You Season 6, it might be best to remain patient.

Over the course of five chapters, Joe has demonstrated an unhealthy obsession, stalking, and murder towards various women he refers to as “You”. This includes Guinevere Beck (played by Elizabeth Lail), Candace Stone (Ambyr Childers), Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti), and Kate Lockwood (Charlotte Ritchie).

New York City.

However, in the most recent installment of Netflix’s suspenseful series, signs of weakness emerge, particularly when a fresh “You” character, aspiring writer Bronte (played by Madeline Brewer), enters the scene. Following the shocking finale of Season 5, here’s an explanation for why Netflix may not renew it. Proceed with caution: spoilers lie ahead!

Why You Season 6 isn’t going ahead

The fifth season of “You” on Netflix has been described as the concluding part of the series. Initially, executive producers Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter envisioned it as a five-season journey, and true to their plans, they are bringing it to an end in this fifth season.

Additionally, the sixth season of “You” might prove unnecessary, since it seems there’s no further narrative left for Joe’s story. If you were to imagine a scenario where ten episodes are dedicated to his imprisonment, that could be an option.

At the end of Season 5, it was ultimately Bronte, Kate, Nadia Farran (played by Amy-Leigh Hickman), and Marienne Bellamy (portrayed by Tati Gabrielle) who led to his arrest by the authorities.

All parties concerned can find closure and lead fulfilling lives, as Bronte pays tribute to Beck by reissuing her posthumous work ‘The Dark Face of Love’, excluding any contributions from Joe.

In the end, Joe is given a life sentence in prison following his numerous convictions. This seems an appropriate finale for Badgley’s portrayal of the antihero.

Moreover, not only that, but the filming for the fifth season of “You” was completed in the year 2024 – marking the expiration of Danish actor Penn Badgley’s six-year deal with Netflix for the series.

Michael Foley and Justin W. Lo, now at the helm for You Season 5, expressed that it’s quite uncommon to have the chance to produce five seasons of a series, not to mention wrapping up the storyline – all while returning the characters and production to where the journey originally started.

Will there be You spinoffs?

In April 2025, I haven’t found any concrete plans for a spinoff series based on the original show. Yet, considering its massive popularity, I always keep my fingers crossed and hope that one day the opportunity might arise again!

A spinoff could go in several interesting directions. One possibility is focusing on the lives of Marienne, Nadia, Kate, or Bronte after Joe, with a suspenseful narrative emerging as they face a fresh danger in their post-Joe existence.

An alternative approach might focus on Joe and Love’s child, Henry. Jumping ahead 15 years into the future could provide an engaging perspective on how he deals with or inherits his father’s legacy, thereby expanding the You universe without requiring Lokesh’s (Penn Badgley) reappearance.

There’s more to explore in the Youniverse

If you’re bummed out that “You” has concluded, why not delve into the captivating novels penned by Caroline Kepnes, upon which the Netflix series is adapted? The You series consists of four enthralling books from the best-seller list, such as:

  • You (2014)
  • Hidden Bodies (2016)
  • You Love Me (2021)
  • For You and Only You (2023)

While Season 1 largely adhered to the initial novel, the later episodes drew inspiration from subsequent books rather than being direct adaptations. For instance, Love Quinn, as portrayed in the show, was never a killer in the original stories, and Joe’s storyline in London was an exclusive creation for the series.

In the latest work by Kepnes, titled “For You and Only You,” I find myself immersed in the story as Joe embarks on a journey to Harvard, where he becomes part of an esteemed writing program. As fate would have it, my heart is once again captivated by a fresh enchantress.

Previously, the author seemed open to writing another You book, so we’ll simply need to stay tuned to find out if it gets approved.

Until that moment, I’ve been eagerly waiting – and now it’s finally here! You Season 5 is now streaming on Netflix for all of us fans to enjoy.
