Twenty-four years after its initial release, Ridley Scott’s 2024 historical epic has become a global streaming sensation following a $462 million box office run. However, this isn’t the director’s first foray into period films; in fact, his debut film, “The Duellists,” was set in 19th-century France. Later, Scott took viewers back to the era of Christopher Columbus with the movie “1492: Conquest of Paradise.” This epic production, however, garnered more indifference than enthusiasm.

Gods and Kings.” His most recent projects include “The Last Duel,” set in medieval France, and the upcoming 2023 release, “Napoleon.” Rome, too, has served as a backdrop for Scott’s work, culminating in what is arguably his most successful film to date.

Gladiator 2 Tops Paramount+’s Global Streaming Charts

It’s Been Streaming In The U.S. Since January

In the year 2000, Scott’s movie “Gladiator” triumphed at the Oscars and ruled the box office. However, after a gap of 24 years, “Gladiator II” was released, but unlike its predecessor, it failed to impress at the cinemas. Interestingly, Russell Crowe, who played the lead in the original film, was not part of the 2024 “Gladiator” sequel. Nevertheless, the movie still managed to attract big-name actors such as Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, and the rising talent Paul Mescal.

Months after wrapping up its theater success with a staggering $462 million global earnings, I find myself deeply engrossed in the streaming sensation that is “Gladiator II”. This film has taken over Paramount+’s global chart (according to Flixpatrol), proving that its appeal transcends the big screen. Interestingly, it was made available on streaming platforms domestically as early as January, which explains why it’s no longer in the top ten in the U.S. Currently, it seems to be missing from the domestic limelight, but I can attest that it continues to captivate audiences worldwide through the convenience of streaming services.

What Gladiator 2’s Streaming Success Means & Will There Be A Third Movie?

Gladiator 3 Is Not Yet In The Works

As a movie critic, I must admit that I was quite impressed with the impressive global streaming success of “Gladiator II.” Following its epic release, it generated a staggering $172 million domestically and an additional $288 million internationally. However, this split suggests that the franchise’s popularity might not be significantly higher overseas compared to North America.

While the film’s current streaming success around the world can certainly be interpreted as a positive sign for the franchise, it hardly provides compelling evidence that Ridley Scott should immediately dive into “Gladiator 3” production. After all, a strong performance doesn’t necessarily mean an overwhelming demand for more installments in the series.

It seems that the elderly director might soon be gearing up to create Gladiator 3. He has expressed plans for another sequel, stating back in September to French Premiere “I’ve been thinking about Gladiator 3. Yes, truly! I’ve ignited the spark,” implying he’s serious about the project.

In the finale of Gladiator II, there are echoes of The Godfather, as the protagonist finds himself in a position he never sought, pondering, “Now, what do I do?” Thus, the upcoming film will delve into the story of an individual who doesn’t desire his current predicament.

In Scott’s latest announcement, it was disclosed that he had penned eight pages for the third installment of ‘Gladiator’, titled ‘Gladiator 3′. The director hinted vaguely about the narrative, suggesting it would focus on Lucius ruling the throne and fulfilling Marcus Aurelius’ vision of a peaceful Rome. Scott further mentioned that unlike its predecessor, this sequel is expected to steer clear of the arena, meaning no more gladiators in ‘Gladiator’.

It’s possible for the franchise to exist without Crowe’s Maximus character, but it would be challenging to maintain the allure of a potential Gladiator II, especially if there were no arena-based action sequences. For Scott to believe he can carry on the franchise without its primary draw is an indication that he has a robust and captivating concept in mind.
