In the gripping new film “Barron’s Cove,” Garrett Hedlund portrays the troubled character of Caleb. Haunted by a turbulent past, Caleb is plunged into despair and fury when his son meets an untimely and horrific end. Swearing vengeance for the loss of his only child, Caleb sets his sights on an unlikely target: a young boy named Ethan (Christian Convery), who bears a striking resemblance to the deceased son.

Additionally, the movie features Tramell Tillman (from “Severance”), portraying Caleb’s friend, Brittany Snow as Jackie, a former spouse of the protagonist, Stephen Lang in the role of crime boss Benji, among others.

On June 6, 2025, the movie will be simultaneously shown in theaters and on VOD platforms. The story begins with a heartbreaking event, which takes a sinister turn as the main character, Caleb, abducts a child, leading the plot further into darkness.

In a heart-to-heart chat, Russ Milheim from TopMob interviewed actor Garrett Hedlund. They talked about the surprising plotline, and Hedlund agreed that his character Caleb truly believes he is acting righteously. The actor further elaborated that the story’s context and overall flow are intended to pose a significant query to viewers: “At what lengths would you go for your child?

Garrett Hedlund on Playing a Protagonist That Kidnaps a Child

Garrett Hedlund’s Caleb “Seems Completely Justified” In His Actions.

  • TopMob: “It’s an intense movie that you’ve made here, very dark. One thing that struck me when watching it, the movie basically starts out with your character, the protagonist, kidnapping a child, which is kind of a wild move for the main character to make. So, just right from the start, we’re at an interesting point. What were your thoughts when you first read that in the script?”

In the beginning of the film, there’s a scene where an unidentified boy ties another boy to the railway tracks. What follows is absolutely shocking. This is a character we haven’t been introduced to before, and it later transpires that he was unaware of this terrible event.

By the time my character Caleb abducts a child, it appears entirely justifiable that he’s driven by this act, the kidnapping incident itself. Essentially, he’s on a mission for vengeance and answers, which raises a question to any viewer or parent: How far would you go in pursuit of justice for your child? The audience gets to witness Caleb enacting this dilemma firsthand.

The Complicated Dynamic Between Caleb and Ethan in Barron’s Cove

Garrett Hedlund Describes Their Relationship as a “Dance of Manipulation and Lies.”

  • TopMob: “Part of the movie is that really complicated dynamic that you have with Christian Convery’s Ethan. Can you just talk about how you guys built [and] helped establish that dynamic between you two, both character-wise and just on set?”

As a film enthusiast, let me tell you, Christian Bale is an exceptional young talent. Back when my little one was still an infant, we were living in Boston. Despite our busy schedule, I found myself captivated by the series ‘Sweet Tooth.’ It was such a unique and engaging show, offering a fresh perspective that I couldn’t get enough of.

I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of it, so I was delighted when he joined the movie and recognized some similarities within himself. The scenes were indeed intense, portraying a Marionette-like dance of manipulation and deceit… Yet, he proved to be an exceptional partner throughout this journey. There wasn’t a single challenge he couldn’t navigate.

Garrett Hedlund on Caleb’s Rough Exterior

“He’s Haunted By His Past and the Bad Things That He’s Done.”

  • TopMob: “The movie focuses a lot on the idea of this tough exterior, you know, abrasive or not, that people can put on that kind of protects what they’re really thinking or feeling. Can you talk about how that idea really permeates throughout the movie as a whole?”

‘Was I sufficient for my son before all these events unfolded? Did I offer him joy? Did I safeguard him? [Did I impart him knowledge such as] how to tie his shoes, to all the essentials.’

I found it touching to observe a man, typically seen as harsh or formidable, questioning his fatherhood in this way: Did I do well by them? Was I adequate? This is a question that often crosses children’s minds regarding their parents. You know, were they good enough, or why did someone leave and abandon me? Was it my fault? This is a feeling we can all relate to. It was endearing to witness such a tough character pondering over his role as a father.

In this scenario, I find myself drawn to uncovering the mystery of who the antagonist might be. It could be the one causing harm, the one taking him, or the one pursuing him, or perhaps it’s the larger system that has let them down. As I read, I found myself on the edge of my seat, much like when I first started, eagerly trying to figure out the story’s villain.

In my opinion, it stirs up quite a mix of questions for the viewer, making them eager to find out what happens in the movie right up until the very end. This mix includes Caleb’s intentions, whether he is seeking revenge or trying to escape guilt.
