WARNING! SPOILERS ahead for Chicago PD season 12, episode 22, “Vows.”
In the 22nd episode of Chicago PD’s 12th season, titled “Vows,” hints are dropped about a potential new adversary who could pose a greater threat to Voight than his long-standing foe, Reid. Throughout season 12, Reid served as Voight’s primary antagonist, holding the position of Deputy Chief in the Chicago Police Department. This role allowed him to meddle with Voight’s management of the Intelligence Unit. The conflict between Voight and Reid initially revolved around undercover tactics, each spying on the other, but it escalated into a personal feud when Reid orchestrated Torres’ arrest and suspended Burgess due to the Gloria Perez controversy.
In the episode titled “Vows,” the confrontation between Voight and Reid reaches its climax. Voight excludes Chapman following Torres’ arrest despite her being both his girlfriend and partner in apprehending Reid, because he intends to violate the law to deal with the Reid issue. The final episode of Chicago PD concludes with Reid’s death, and Chapman discovers that Voight orchestrated it, which is troubling for their relationship. It also places Voight in a precarious legal position since Chapman holds the position of Assistant State’s Attorney.
Chapman & Voight’s Falling Out In Chicago PD Season 12 Finale Explained
Chapman Doesn’t Approve of Voight’s Morally Gray Choices
The disagreement between Chapman and Voight primarily stemmed from how Voight decided to confront Reid. Prior to Reid using his influence to dismantle the Intelligence Unit, Chapman and Voight had been collaborating to bring Reid down legally. They were collecting evidence suggesting that Reid was connected with Jesus Otero and other notorious gang leaders. However, Voight understood that this methodical strategy wouldn’t shield him or his team once Reid took action. So, Voight chose to exclude Chapman from the plan and instead focused on arranging Reid’s assassination. He employed Ortero’s son, Renny, to pull the trigger in retaliation for Reid killing Ortero senior.
I soon came to the conclusion that Voight was involved in the murder, but he vehemently denied it and there was no concrete evidence to prove it. However, this situation goes beyond just this single incident. I now question Voight’s character, suspecting he has strayed from his path and no longer resorts to violence or dubious methods to seek justice. This change in behavior leaves me disheartened and aggravated, leading me to reconsider our relationship after he pushes me away and employs street justice to handle Reid’s situation.
Chapman’s Heartbreak Can Result In Her Turning Against Voight & Intelligence
She May Want To Hold Voight Accountable Because Of Her Disappointment
I’m crushed that Voight chose to act independently rather than collaborate with me to bring down Reid legally. This kind of letdown often pushes characters into extreme measures, whether it’s seeking retribution or trying to undo the damage caused by the rift. Determined as I am, I may leverage my position as an assistant state attorney to construct a case against Voight that mirrors the one I expected him to help me build against Reid. Given my suspicions about Voight’s involvement in Reid’s demise, my next move is to gather evidence to substantiate these claims.
Regardless of the personal struggles Chapman might be facing, it’s quite probable that she would still choose to take this particular step. Given her role as an assistant state attorney, it’s essential for her to avoid any association with a legal controversy.
Regardless of Chapman’s preference, her professional obligations might not allow her to avoid prosecuting Voight.
Why Chapman Can Be More Dangerous Than Reid In Chicago PD
She Has Both Power And Knowledge, Plus Voight Has Feelings For Her
Although Reid was quite dangerous, he had several vulnerabilities that Chapman did not possess. One of these weaknesses became evident when Reid moved Burgess back to Intelligence after she passed the detective exam, a power play aimed at placing Burgess in his debt so he could manipulate her against Voight. This move by Reid gave Voight an opportunity to anticipate and thwart his plans more easily. Furthermore, Reid’s connections with gang members could potentially be leveraged against him, whereas Chapman is known for her unwavering integrity and does not always make her intentions obvious.
In the upcoming season 13 of Chicago PD, Voight’s past connection with Chapman might prove to be a significant vulnerability for him. The bond between them was strong enough that Chapman is privy to some of Voight’s hidden truths and understands his emotional susceptibilities quite well.
The enigmatic nature of Chapman’s possible wrongdoings creates an intriguing plot twist within the series “Chicago PD“, unlike Voight’s confrontations with Reid, which have a more defined resolution.
