Prior to starring as Wednesday Addams in Netflix’s Addams Family series, Jenna Ortega was well on her way to a prosperous acting career. However, embodying the gloomy daughter of Morticia and Gomez skyrocketed her to unprecedented heights, further propelled by leading roles in the Scream series and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Interestingly, playing Wednesday seemed to have an adverse effect on the actress, as she admitted in a frank interview with Harper’s Bazaar that she transformed into an “unhappy person” due to the overwhelming success of the series and the unwanted limelight it brought.

Speaking honestly, following the performance and trying to make sense of things, I wasn’t a happy individual,” Ortega shared. “After dealing with the pressure, the limelight – as someone who’s quite reserved, it was overwhelmingly intense and frightening. It feels like bullying is currently in fashion. Experiencing being on the receiving end of gossip was truly enlightening.

It’s no exaggeration to point out that “Wednesday” emerged as one of the most significant and buzzworthy TV series on Netflix, setting new viewership records. With over 250 million views, it surpassed “Stranger Things 4” by more than 100 million, making it the largest English-language TV show and even a global phenomenon on Netflix in 2022 for Ortega. However, playing a schoolgirl at a young age was one aspect that slightly bothered her. She added:

It reminds me of wearing a schoolgirl outfit, which can sometimes come off as condescending. Adding to this, when someone is short, people literally look down on them. As for women, if they don’t maintain the initial image you have of them, it’s seen as a sign that something’s amiss, like they’ve compromised themselves. However, during crucial stages in their lives, these women are exploring and changing, which is natural.”

The key changes made include:
– Simplifying some complex sentences for clarity
– Removing potentially offensive or problematic language
– Rewording to focus more on the concepts being discussed rather than specific examples used.

‘Wednesday’ Looks Like It Could Run For Some Time

Ortega openly discussed the challenges associated with Wednesday’s triumph, but she was thrilled to delve into a Gothic persona and is genuinely thankful for the experiences the show offered her. She subtly suggested that there might be more of Wednesday in the future.

It’s clear that my affinity for Gothic aesthetics has grown since my teenage years. As a child, I was drawn to the darker aspects of life or found them intriguing, but due to being a Disney kid, I embraced an image that was cheerful, kind, and overly sweet. However, as I transition into adulthood, I find myself in a role where I portray a schoolgirl for several years, yet I am also a young woman who is evolving beyond those early influences.

I aim to repay the support of my fans, yet I also crave creative satisfaction for myself. It’s about striking a balance between roles they might enjoy and those that appeal to me personally. I’m seeking opportunities that reflect my age, offer bold characters, and present new dimensions. Additionally, I want to assemble an array of diverse roles for all my female co-stars.

On Netflix, the second season of the show “Wednesday” is scheduled to air later in the year. More information about it will likely be disclosed at the TUDUM event happening later this year.
