Showrunner Allan Heinberg clarifies the reasoning behind concluding the series and discusses the effects of Neil Gaiman’s persistent disputes.

As a devoted fan, I want to share some intriguing insights about Netflix’s The Sandman series. Recently, Heinberg clarified that the decision to end the show after just two seasons was actually made three years ago, long before the recent allegations against Neil Gaiman, the original comic book series creator, surfaced. Heinberg further explained that focusing solely on Dream’s story from the source material significantly limited the series’ potential scope. He noted that in some volumes, Dream only appears in a couple of scenes, and there are numerous protagonists in The Sandman, but the story is often perceived as his alone.

Heinberg acknowledged the accusations against Gaiman regarding inappropriate behavior, stating that these allegations did not influence or hinder the production or direction of the series. In simpler terms, he explained that these issues didn’t interfere with their planned process and that they continued working as scheduled. He further mentioned that while he was aware of these accusations, they didn’t play a role in the world of creating the show. Essentially, he compared each production to its own separate island.

The Sandman Will End With Season 2

Drawing inspiration from the iconic 1989 comic book series penned by Neil Gaiman and co-created with Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg, Netflix’s “The Sandman” debuted in 2022, delighting fans around the world. This series depicts Dream, a living embodiment of dreams and nightmares who serves as the supreme ruler over the mystical, dreamlike realm called the Dreaming. Upon its release, “The Sandman” was generally well-received by both critics and viewers, earning an 88% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on a total of 123 reviews.

In July 2024, five women came forward with accusations of past instances of sexual harassment, abuse, and assault against Neil Gaiman. According to a lawsuit filed by his former nanny, Scarlett Pavlovich, in a Wisconsin federal court, “This lawsuit stems from the sexual abuse committed by Defendant Neil Gaiman, with Amanda Palmer playing a role in arranging and facilitating Plaintiff for such abusive encounters.

Speaking as someone who appreciates clarity, I’d rephrase it this way: “I, being fully aware that Gaiman might pose a risk to Scarlett, had previously advised Gaiman to keep his distance from her. However, I failed to inform Scarlett about the potential danger she could face from Gaiman. If I had warned Scarlett about this known risk, she would never have accepted the babysitting job at Gaiman’s house for my child.

The Sandman is available for streaming now on Netflix.
