Lawmakers in Russia argue that animated movies such as Shrek and Monsters Inc are causing a “harmful influence” among children, leading them to push for a ban on these films.
Look out, Shrek! The Russians are coming for you.
On May 26th, Russian legislators gathered for a meeting during which they criticized multiple cartoons and claimed that Western forces are attempting to brainwash their children using children’s programs.
During a recent gathering, as reported by The Moscow Times, presentations showcased Shrek, The Grinch, and Monsters Inc side by side with “good” children’s entertainment and playthings from the Soviet period. These lawmakers aim to take decisive steps and prohibit the broadcast of these animated series outright.
Russian lawmakers say Shrek embodies “negative traits”
One slide in the presentation suggested that movies such as Shrek might not depict optimal role models for children.
Over time, as Western culture seeped in, there emerged figures who displayed undesirable qualities yet were portrayed positively, some people argued. This shift led to the decline of the traditional, universally admired character.
A different slide showcased a snapshot of the well-known mission ‘No Russian’ from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which depicted an airport scene and a picture insinuating that the West was satirizing the Crocus City Hall terrorist incident from 2024.
In the process of continuing the discussion, they referenced a saying from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare as an example of the unfavorable depiction of Russians.
As I navigated through these digital landscapes, it felt like the real world was mirroring my game. Instead of enemy turrets, it was Russian air strikes obliterating territories. The once bustling streets became ghost towns as innocent lives were cut short in their desperate attempts to escape the invasion.
Moreover, Death Note also faced criticism, as authorities attributed its potentially harmful effects to various factors such as video games, music, fashion trends, and written works.
In the ‘Literature’ section, a picture of the six-chapter collection book titled ‘Death Note: Short Tales’ was displayed instead.
Sergei Mironov, head of ‘A Fair Russia’ party, cautioned that Western nations are aggressively influencing our youth with their ideologies.
“It’s a hybrid war. If you want to defeat the enemy, raise their children,” he said.
Yana Lantratova, a representative from A Just Russia and the head of the State Duma’s committee on civil society and religious organizations, pointed out that it may be challenging, from a legal perspective, to enforce an absolute ban on Western children’s content.
In my perspective, there’s a bit of a regulatory blur. What we truly require is unequivocal guidelines. At this moment, it seems like we’re lacking the necessary tools for effective intervention.
Instead, her intention is to collaborate with the parliament for drafting laws that aim to foster “Russian traditional spiritual ideals.
