Only a handful of movies can master the craft of death scenes that are side-splittingly excessive, and that film does it exceptionally well. The macabre fusion of dark wit and gruesome violence has kept viewers hooked since the year 2000, securing itself a prestigious place in the genre’s hall of fame. Its groundbreaking concepts and edge-of-your-seat sequences have left an indelible mark on countless minds as beloved (and petrifying) memories. Now, thanks to the 14-year break between Final Destination 5 and Final Destination Bloodlines, the series is back in full swing again.
As an avid fan myself, I can’t help but notice the influx of both old and new fans flooding the cinemas. Long-time followers of this captivating series are well-versed in its lore, but the narrative twists might confound some fresh faces. Honestly, this series has never shied away from complexity. It’s also no secret that it’s had its fair share of struggles when it comes to tying together its various installments. However, Bloodlines could potentially serve as the most conclusive chapter yet.
Newcomers might inadvertently overlook a subtle (yet pivotal) detail: Shortly after the bloodshed ensues, the enigmatic William Bludworth, played by Tony Todd, hints at someone who seems to have outsmarted Death itself.
How Does Death Work in the Final Destination Franchise?
- Lifecast stand-ins and chocolate syrup blood are common hallmarks of the series’ practical effects.
- The underlying idea for the Final Destination series comes from an unused X-Files spec script by Jeffrey Reddick.
Beneath its complex and gruesome demise scenarios, Death is the ultimate End Game. Though it may not be suitable for a fun Halloween costume, it operates in a (mostly) predictable manner. As the series frequently reminds us, Death dislikes being deceived. When disaster strikes, Death aims to claim all victims. If someone tries to intervene, those who were “rescued” are living on borrowed time. However, it’s not as straightforward as causing simultaneous heart attacks for everyone; Death has more intricate ways of getting its due.
Intriguingly mysterious, death often orchestrates dramatic exits for every individual. Occasionally, fortunate escapers may be saved by a fortuitous twist of fate, such as an unexpected explosion from a propane grill. However, the majority don’t escape so effortlessly. Instead, they become entangled in intricate, lethal sequences. For instance, a faulty toilet could lead to someone falling onto an indoor clothesline. Death seems to operate on a schedule, and those who survive are “hunted” based on their impending fate.
In this hypothetical scenario, consider three individuals named A, B, and C, who are destined to pass away in a specific order: A, then B, and finally C. If these characters survive according to the “prearranged” sequence, they will meet their ends in the same order: A, followed by B, and lastly C. Death is likened to a legal entity due to the numerous conditions. For instance, if person B avoids their second death, it doesn’t mean they are safe; instead, their death is merely postponed. Later on, Death will reclaim them. If another person meddles with these predetermined fatal events, they too will be targeted by Death. So far in the storyline, there are only two methods to break this cycle. One can either take a life, thereby claiming the remaining lifespan of that individual, or die oneself.
Who Is Kimberly Corman in the Final Destination Franchise?
- Amazingly, despite requiring plenty of CG work, all the cars in Final Destination 2 are legitimate, physical vehicles.
- The Final Destination 2 production team chose A. J. Cook to play Kimberly after seeing and loving her ability to portray nuanced vulnerability.
Now, the second choice seems quite grim, and a permanent demise would simply strengthen Death’s position further on our list. This is where Death’s seemingly legal background becomes evident. It demands fulfillment only when a person stops breathing. However, if that individual is resuscitated, they are in the clear; their debt has been settled. Introducing Kimberly Corman (A.J. Cook). This young character and harbinger of doom makes her entrance in Final Destination 2, a year following the majority of Flight 180’s survivors being eliminated.
In a similar fashion to Alex Browning (played by Devon Sawa), she uses her chilling foresight to save a group of lives. Her journey throughout the film closely follows Alex’s, but things take a turn as the movie reaches its climax. Unlike any other survivor in the “Final Destination” series, Kimberly takes an unprecedented action: She manages to disrupt Death’s plan. Guided by her most recent visions, Kimberly seizes an ambulance and drives it into a lake.
It’s no wonder that the incident confined her inside the car’s interior. Luckily, Thomas Burke (Michael Landes) rescued her and medical responders brought her back to life. Significantly, prior to regaining consciousness, Kimberly had undergone a legal cardiac death – a state where she was clinically dead. Since she had technically died, the cost for her life was considered settled. Both Kimberly and Burke managed to make it through that harrowing experience. Interestingly, Bloodlines implies that Kimberly tricked Death in some way.
Final Destination Bloodlines Delivers Kimberly Corman’s Long-Awaited Survival Story
- A. J. Cook’s appearance on 9-1-1 mirrors her Final Destination storyline, as a first responder saves her from aspirating (albeit on vomit instead of water).
- Perhaps fittingly, A. J. Cook stars in the beloved crime-solving procedural Criminal Minds.
It’s intriguing that whether Kimberly survived or not has been a topic of discussion in the world of Final Destination. Despite not meeting her demise in a canonical manner within the series, she made brief appearances in the film Choose Their Fate, which was an interactive feature included in the DVD release of Final Destination 3.
In some of these alternate scenarios, certain characters were surprisingly spared from fatal encounters with death. Among these altered conclusions, viewers noticed a newspaper. The headline and content detailed a gruesome incident involving a woodchipper. It seemed that two unlucky individuals got tangled in the equipment, instantly reducing them to pulp: Thomas Burke and Kimberly Corman.
Without a doubt, the alternate endings titled “Choose Their Fate” are additional features, primarily intended for DVD purchasers’ entertainment, and not meant to be considered as part of the main storyline. However, some spectators might argue that their off-screen deaths make them essentially unchangeable. Given that one character was canonically killed by a brick off-screen, an event mentioned in numerous newspaper articles scattered across the series, it’s reasonable for fans to view this death as irrevocable.
It’s no surprise that the fact that Kimberly has survived has become a significant aspect in the series, as it opens up intriguing possibilities for the storyline. If A.J. Cook decides to re-enter the perilous realm of Final Destination, characters like Kimberly Corman (and possibly Thomas Burke) could provide guidance for future survivors, given the absence of William Bludworth following Tony Todd’s passing. This scenario assumes that Kimberly chooses to return to the series.
