You Can’t Create Your Own Character In The Duskbloods, But You Can Customize One

In the latest Nintendo Direct presentation, it’s been clarified that The Duskbloods, unlike games such as Elden Ring and Dark Souls, won’t offer fully customizable characters. Instead, From Software has confirmed that players will have the option to select from a variety of more than a dozen unique characters, each with their own customization possibilities.

Initially, when The Duskbloods was unveiled, it appeared similar to Bloodborne, exclusive to PlayStation 4. However, this comparison is misleading, as The Duskbloods stands out as an eight-player multiplayer game emphasizing PvPvE (Player versus Player versus Environment) experiences. In a recent interview with the game’s director and From Software president, Hidetaka Miyazaki, he shed light on the game’s distinct PvPvE aspects and the intriguing “Bloodsworn” character options players will have at their disposal.

Instead of creating a new character, players are provided with more than a dozen distinct options, each featuring its own identity and physical traits. Additionally, these characters come equipped with unique weapons, and they also possess the capability to call upon Non-Player Characters (NPCs) for assistance during combat, who can attack from afar using their own weapon or tool.

Each Bloodsworn hero offers the opportunity for personalization. Miyazaki explains that characters can be modified to a certain degree, providing gamers with the enjoyment of creating a character tailored to their preferences. Customization involves modifying a character’s “lineage and destiny,” according to Miyazaki, which impacts abilities, visual aspects, and even interactions with other players. Advancement is achieved by participating in matches and accomplishing tasks, rewards that can then be employed to enhance and further customize each Bloodsworn hero.

In a game of The Duskbloods, the goal for players is to achieve objectives, accumulate Victory Points, and be the sole survivor, known as the last Bloodsworn standing. Additionally, there are individual goals or special events that offer unique rewards. Players have some leeway in this, as they can designate a “Role” for their character which may lead to bonuses for working with or taking out a particular target, as Miyazaki stated.

Instead of the typical role-playing games From Software is known for, Elden Ring: Nightreign seems to be quite a different take. Remarkably, it bears some resemblance to the developer’s upcoming game, Elden Ring. This multiplayer spin-off shares a similar gameplay structure where players pick hero-like characters and collaborate to conquer bosses throughout a match. Interestingly, From Software has announced a new playable character for Elden Ring: Nightreign – Ironeye, who specializes in using bows.

Although both Nightreign and The Duskbloods have a multiplayer emphasis, From Software assures us they won’t abandon single-player games. Originally, The Duskbloods was designed for the first Nintendo Switch, but its development was later adapted to take advantage of the new features offered by the upcoming Switch 2 hardware.

Release date for Switch 2 remains June 5 (for now), but pre-orders in the U.S. have been postponed due to updated tariff policies in the US, which may lead to price hikes or delays. On the other hand, The Duskbloods is scheduled as an exclusive title for Switch 2, expected in 2026.
