Fans of The Black Phone can experience more of the story’s spooky world right now! A new short film, officially connected to the original movie, is available to stream.
The sequel to ‘The Black Phone,’ titled ‘The Black Phone 2,’ will be in cinemas on October 17th, with Ethan Hawke reprising his role as the villain, The Grabber. Before the film’s release, director Scott Derrickson has shared a short film called ‘Dreamkill’ that expands on the story’s universe.
The segment was part of the 2023 found footage horror anthology V/H/S/85.
Black Phone 2 director made a spin-off film
Dreamkill centers around a detective, portrayed by Freddy Rodriguez, who starts receiving unsettling VHS tapes depicting violent murders. These aren’t just random threats – the murders actually happen, leading him to investigate Gunther Blake (Diethel Derrickson), a young boy who claims the footage originates from his premonitory dreams.

We learn that Gunther is Gwen’s cousin – the same Gwen from *The Black Phone*. This connection ties the current story directly to the previous film and suggests that Gwen’s family might share special, supernatural gifts. Remember, Gwen had precognitive dreams about her brother Finney being taken by The Grabber in the first movie.
Derrickson described the tie-in as “a little Easter egg” for fans.
You can watch the short film *Dreamkill* now on Shudder as part of the *V/H/S/85* collection. If you’re looking forward to *The Black Phone 2*, this is a great way to expand on that story – it’s highly recommended for horror lovers!
