I was in a predicament as a fan when it came to watching “The Four Seasons,” a film by Alan Alda that wasn’t available for streaming until recently. Prior to the release of Tina Fey’s new TV adaptation on Netflix, you couldn’t stream or rent it anywhere. It seemed strange that one of the top-ten grossers from 1981 was only accessible as a budget DVD from Universal or a slightly better quality Blu-ray from Kino Lorber. I even reached out to various sources – Netflix, Universal Pictures (the original rights holders), and Alan Alda’s team – but no one could provide a clear explanation for this situation. As of last week, not even Alan Alda himself had any updates on plans for streaming “The Four Seasons.
Three nights later, Fey declared at the Netflix-run Paris Theater in New York, with Alda present, that his film would be available on the streaming platform alongside her show on May 5th. This announcement was confirmed by both Netflix and Alda’s team to Vulture. Exciting news for fans of the beloved divorce romantic comedy, old and new! “Are we having fun yet?
It turns out we never received a clear explanation as to why it wasn’t available initially, but it’s not unusual for older films to fall through the gaps in streaming services. Universal, being the original producer and distributor, had the rights, which meant they could have put it on NBCU’s Peacock or offered it as a digital rental, much like Paramount+ did with the Shōgun miniseries when Hulu’s new show gained popularity last year. It seems that Universal may not have seen the value of licensing it until late in the game. (The 1981 film Four Seasons wasn’t listed as “coming soon” on Netflix.) So, what transpired between Netflix, Universal, and the Alda camp following their initial responses to Vulture and Fey’s announcement of good news? A source close to the negotiations stated that strategically, “nothing significant changed; licensing and promotional timelines were just being worked out.” Negotiations, like life, can happen quickly.
