You Can and Can't Romance in Metaphor ReFantazio. Relationship Status „It's Complicated”

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must admit that Metaphor ReFantazio has left me a bit perplexed in terms of relationships. Having been spoiled by the romance options in previous Atlus games like Persona, I found myself yearning for a similar experience in this title. Alas, it seems that the developers have chosen to take a different approach with Bonds instead of Social Links.

In a different wording: ReFantazio, a new title from Atlus, bears striking resemblances to their iconic series, Persona. Although it shares many features, one notable absence is the romance system (though stealing remains an option). The romantic dynamics in this game are intriguingly ambiguous – they’re simultaneously present and absent, making for a complex experience.

Metaphor ReFantazio – Relationships Explained

It’s difficult not to compare Metaphor ReFantazio and the Persona series. The combat system, graphical style and UI are confusingly similar in both franchises. So, it’s not surprising that many players thought they would be alike in terms of romance, too. Instead of referring to Social Links from Persona, they are now called Bonds. You can establish friendships with your companions by leveling them up through quests and cultivating Royal Virtues such as Courage, Wisdom, or Tolerance. However, these relationships should not be confused with romantic ones.

In the game, certain conversations may hint at emotional connections between characters, particularly Junah and Eupha who seem to have stronger feelings towards the main character (MC). If you prefer to avoid any further intimate situations with these characters, refrain from completing their bonding moments. However, it’s important to note that these are not fully-fledged romantic relationships yet.
