You Abandoned Me, Joe! Forgotten Character Snubbed in You Season 5

Attention: The article ahead reveals SPOILERS for the fifth season of ‘You’. Unfortunately, a significant figure from Joe Goldberg’s past is absent in this series finale, which could have added depth to the storyline. Over the five seasons of ‘You’, Joe interacts with numerous individuals, not all of whom end up meeting their demise at the hands of Penn Badgley’s serial killer. When Joe is outed for murdering Clayton during season 5, additional accusations arise, and characters from his past reappear.

The final season of You features a variety of intriguing guest appearances, including an older Paco, Sherry and Cary Conrad, as well as Dottie Quinn who solves a Love Quinn mystery four years after her death in season 3. While the show effectively concludes Joe’s story by revisiting his past, it falls short in resolving some lingering plot threads involving a character whose life he significantly impacts. It’s disheartening that, given all the testimonies about Joe Goldberg, this particular character never makes an appearance.

You Season 5 Fails To Bring Back Jenna Ortega’s Ellie Despite Never Giving Her Closure

Season 3’s Follow-Up Doesn’t Sufficiently Wrap Up Her Story

In the second season of “You,” Jenna Ortega’s character, Ellie, plays a significant role that left many fans eagerly anticipating her return after her confrontation with Joe Goldberg. The finale of the second season finds Joe sending Ellie away to Florida following Love Quinn’s murder of Delilah, with the intention of keeping her safe as Love plans to frame Ellie for the crime. In subsequent seasons, it is hinted that Joe continues to stay in touch with Ellie, but she never reappears or receives a satisfactory resolution to her storyline.

It’s quite disheartening, considering Ortega’s rising fame recently, to realize that she didn’t reappear in the final season of “You”, despite fan expectations. Some had hoped for even a brief appearance, regardless of the role size. However, the show missed the opportunity to include Ellie again, leaving her character as an unresolved plot point in Joe Goldberg’s narrative (though it seems less important now given his fate in “You” season 5).

You’s Final Season Had The Perfect Opportunity To Bring Ellie Back Into The Fold

Ellie Could Have Shared Her Own Experience With Joe Goldberg On Social Media

In the later seasons of You, season 5 presents a ripe chance to delve into Ortega’s character: When people from Joe’s past start discussing him on social media due to the uproar over his alleged self-defense killing of Clayton. As these individuals voice their opinions online, some validate that there’s something strange about Joe, while others recount positive interactions with him. A brief appearance by Ellie could be effective here, offering insights into how she feels towards Joe following all the events that transpired.

This development would provide a significant insight into Ellie’s personality post-season 2 of “You”, and it fits well within her narrative arc. In their second encounter, Ellie and Joe share a connection over his social media influence, suggesting that she is tech-savvy. Although she might reduce her own online presence after fleeing, it’s somewhat unexpected that she doesn’t engage or respond to the discussions about Joe on these platforms. Given her age and obvious interest in social media, Ellie would be an ideal candidate for a cameo appearance in “You” season 5’s compilation.

Why Jenna Ortega Didn’t Return For Season 5

Her Wednesday Role Complicated Things

It’s unfortunate not to see Ortega reprise her role as Ellie in You season 5, but it makes sense given her commitment to Wednesday season 2. When questioned about her absence from the final season, showrunners Michael Foley and Justin W. Lo explained to Business Insider that they had initially planned to bring her back, but Ortega’s busy schedule with various projects, including Wednesday, made it challenging to make that happen. The creators hinted at what Ellie might have done if she was part of the season: if she had appeared.

As a fan, I can’t help but think that it was an idea – Ellie from Ortega’s series potentially becoming a benefactor to Dominique and Phoenix – that we had when constructing the storyline. We dared to hope that this could be feasible, yet unfortunately, we were unable to make it happen.

They additionally pointed out that Ellie might have positive things to share about Joe Goldberg, given his assistance towards her following season 2. Regrettably, we won’t get Ellie’s opinions on the main characters from ‘You’, as she is absent in season 5. However, it’s comforting to know that the writers didn’t overlook her; they simply found it impractical to integrate her into the final episodes of the season.
