As a dedicated gamer, I was totally blown away by the latest episode of HBO’s The Last of Us, where an unexpected guest star made a surprising appearance! Now, we get to learn how this person ended up on the show and the intriguing backstory behind their most impactful dialogue. Be warned: This discussion may contain spoilers for Season 2 of The Last of Us.
Indeed, it was me (a huge fan) who recognized Josh Peck, famously known for his roles on Drake & Josh and The Amanda Show, gracing our screens at the start of Episode 4. He portrayed a FEDRA soldier in a flashback scene that took us back to the year 2018.
Peck portrayed Janowitz, and despite his brief screen time, his performance left an indelible impact. In a military vehicle, his character delivers a scathing speech to fellow FEDRA soldiers about his enthusiasm for apprehending what they call “voters.” This term is derogatory, as it refers to survivors in quarantine zones who had their rights stripped away by FEDRA.
Another FEDRA soldier named Greenberg playfully banters with Janowitz, recalling an incident where they apprehended someone. This person was uncooperative, prompting Greenberg to jest about the individual acting inappropriately in public, using phrases like “masturbating and soiling themselves on the streets.” In response to one of the detainees speaking up to the FEDRA troops, Janowitz recalls disciplining the individual and saying something derogatory, “You didn’t have permission to speak, smart-aleck!

In this scene, Isaac’s jokes fall flat among his fellow soldiers, but not with everyone – notably, Jeffrey Wright is portrayed as Isaac. It’s revealed later that Isaac isn’t fully loyal to FEDRA; instead, he secretly works for a faction of rebels, led by Alanna Ubach’s character, Hanrahan. When Isaac encounters Hanrahan, he solidifies his allegiance by imprisoning Janowitz and other soldiers in a van and planting a grenade inside to eliminate them all.
How Peck got the part
In an interview with Variety, Peck admitted that he initially considered himself too timid to watch The Last of Us Season 1 immediately. However, he eventually gave it a try and ended up binge-watching the entire season. To his surprise, he was asked to audition for a role in Season 2, which he had not anticipated. Fortunately, he did receive a callback, and secured the role – adding another non-comedy production credit to his resume, following his work on Opppenheimer.
He believes it’s not by chance that his best work, whether it’s similar to Oppenheimer or other exceptional instances where he’s collaborated with talented actors, seems effortless because everything has been meticulously prepared. The script is flawless, there are no gaps, and everyone involved is at the peak of their abilities. This sense of being part of such a skilled team is invigorating.
Concerning the “jizzboy” remark, Peck expressed, “Conflict has a way of pushing individuals beyond what they believe their limits are.
Peck remarked, “Indeed, there’s nothing comparable in my life to such an intense and awful experience, luckily, yet I can liken it to sharing a humorous tale with my buddies, the one that always makes me laugh.
Here are the remaining three episodes of “The Last of Us Season 2” for viewers to look forward to. However, there’s no need for fans to fret, as HBO has officially confirmed a Season 3. Each new episode can be watched every Sunday evening at 6 PM PT / 9 PM ET exclusively on HBO and Max.
