Yellowstone Secret HIDDEN in Ransom Canyon?! You Won’t Believe It!

If you’re an ardent fan of Yellowstone, you’d recognize that the new Netflix show, Ransom Canyon, differs quite significantly from it. However, if you scrutinize closely, there’s a subtle acknowledgment to Taylor Sheridan himself hidden within.

In a Taylor Sheridan series, however, a visit to the train station isn’t exactly appealing… on the contrary, it’s filled with intense gunfights, raw determination, and plenty of rough, profanity-laced peril. Shows like Yellowstone, 1923, and 1883 have redefined contemporary Western television by setting such a tone.

Despite this hurdle, Netflix has ventured into producing Ransom Canyon, a new TV series now available on their platform. The show centers around Staten, a rancher who harbors cynicism and is an outcast, finding himself compelled to relinquish his land due to his longstanding adversary’s demands. Does this plot seem familiar?

Without a doubt, Ransom Canyon shares some similarities with Virgin River and differs significantly from Yellowstone. However, keep an eye out for a cleverly concealed nod by Taylor Sheridan, a treat that dedicated western enthusiasts won’t want to overlook.

Ransom Canyon had Taylor Sheridan-style “cowboy school”

In conversation with TopMob, actor Jack Schumacher (portraying Yancy Grey) disclosed that Ransom Canyon incorporated a Taylor Sheridan-esque “cowboy academy” on set, reminiscent of the training for both Yellowstone and 1883, as well as the independent spin-off series, Lawman: Bass Reeves. Fans of Yellowstone may recognize this as preparation not only for the principal series but also for the prequel, 1883.

During the mornings for the initial two months, we held a cowboy-themed camp which lasted a few hours each time, as Schumacher detailed. I had no prior knowledge or skills in horseback riding or bullriding, and it turned out to be quite tiring, especially when done for extended periods. Consequently, I found it challenging to walk the day after such sessions.

I’m thankful that no severe injuries occurred, but the amount of training was immense. With the possibility of bullriding returning for Season 2, I might find myself yearning to return to camp again.

In a Texas town brimming with stables, it’s evident that the characters should know how to ride. Yet, it’s just Yancy who finds himself on the rodeo stage. This event unfolds in Episode 5, where he competes in an all-around contest, aiming to pocket $20,000 and simultaneously apprehend a pair of former convicts from his prison past.

Netflix marketed the series as a blend of “Yellowstone” and “Virgin River,” with the intention of attracting fans from both shows. However, Schumacher emphasizes that Ransom Canyon isn’t simply a carbon copy or imitation of either show.

Ransom doesn’t imitate shows like Yellowstone or Virgin River; instead, it explores similar themes that many people are experiencing. However, it doesn’t follow the same path as those series, which I believe is crucial because Ransom manages to stand independently.
