As a longtime fan of the western genre who has followed the Yellowstone saga since its inception, I must say that the recent developments have left me with a mix of excitement and apprehension. On one hand, it’s heartening to see new chapters unfolding in this rich universe, especially with talented actors like Matthew McConaughey and Michelle Pfeiffer joining the cast.
Approximately two years have passed since the final episode of Part 1 from Season 5 of “Yellowstone” aired on Paramount Network, on New Year’s Day 2023. It’s possible that you’ve let some details of the Dutton family conflicts and overall turmoil in the show slip your mind, but don’t worry! Here’s a recap of the key events from that finale, along with insights into the production decisions leading to Kevin Costner‘s exit from the series, as well as updates on its future.
When we last left our cowboys…
In the first half of this season, viewers gained insights into Rip’s (Cole Hauser) past at Yellowstone. The last episode of this half, titled “A Knife and No Coin,” starts with a flashback from Season 5’s opening act, featuring Young Rip (Kyle Red Silverstein) and Young John (Josh Lucas). They are seen disposing of Rowdy, a cowboy killed by Rip due to his inappropriate comments about Young Beth (Kylie Rogers), at the Train Station. Young John underscores that this act binds them for life: “From now on, you’re tied to this ranch until your dying day.” He also suspects that Young Rip harbors feelings for Young Beth and shares some forecasting advice — “You only resist working for me when it’s to protect someone or the ranch itself. You’ll be amazed at how much battling you’ll have to do. It astounds me.” — before Young Rip receives the Yellowstone brand. That must have hurt!
In the here and now, I find myself rejoining Jimmy (Jefferson White), a character who took a backseat during the previous season. Now, he’s settled at the 6666 ranch with his lovely girlfriend Emily (Kathryn Kelly). He’s spruced up his cowboy style, breaking horses in sharp attire and stealing moments to share tender moments with Emily once she’s finished her vet duties. Life is sweet for these ranch-loving pairs, but will the long-anticipated “6666” spin-off series finally take flight?
Simultaneously at the Dutton ranch, Rip is preparing to guide a team of cowboys to Texas to move their cattle, aiming to bypass an impending brucellosis outbreak. Beth (Kelly Reilly), in a heartfelt farewell, expresses her emotions towards Rip, yet assures him that she’ll be joining him in a week using a private plane. Teeter (Jennifer Landon) parts ways with Colby (Denim Richards) but leaves him with a tender kiss and the words “I love you,” making for a touching scene.
Not so sweet is Jamie (Wes Bentley), who, as attorney general, addresses the Montana legislature and senate, asking for a tribunal seeking impeachment of his father, Montana governor John Dutton (Costner). His reasoning? By canceling funding for the airport that Jamie had worked to usher in, John violated state law, didn’t act in the best interest of Montana, opened it up for litigation, lost tax money and hurt tourism.
Upon learning the news, Beth, filled with anger, makes her way to Jamie’s residence. She forcefully enters the house and employs a brick to shatter the peace, using it to strike Jamie on the head. As he bleeds, she attempts to extort him with photographs of him escorting his biological father to the train station, but Jamie merely chuckles in response, reminding Beth that there are numerous remains beneath that location attributed to John and Rip, which could implicate the entire family.
Fueled by anger, Beth makes her way to John’s governor’s mansion to verify a claim Jamie made about the Train Station’s history. Upon hearing the truth from John, she feels both outraged and excluded, as she wasn’t aware of this family secret. Moreover, her ability to use this knowledge against her brother has been weakened. Consequently, she turns to their father and proposes they visit the train station together to confront Jamie about it. After a moment’s thought, they engage in a hushed discussion…a chilling scene indeed!
Interestingly, Jamie queries Sarah, both his love interest and troubleshooter, whether she’s aware of any assassin services that might handle Beth, given his belief that she desires his demise. Remarkably, Sarah indeed knows someone in that line of work! Oh dear!
Meanwhile:
*John asks Monica (Kelsey Asbille) if she and Kayce (Luke Grimes) can move into a modest house in the East Camp of Yellowstone so Kayce can tend to the ranch while John governs in Helena. She agrees, as she wants Yellowstone to be a legacy for their son Tate (Brecken Merrill).
Summer, portrayed by Piper Perabo, remains confined to the Dutton Ranch under house arrest rather than being with John in Helena – quite an uncomfortable situation!
Carter (Finn Little), the adopted son of Rip and Beth, is mastering the art of being a cowboy and charming others. Regrettably, it appears that he has more charm with the animals rather than his prospective romantic interests.
What was all of the between-season drama with Kevin Costner? Is he going to be on new episodes of the show?
Since “Yellowstone” went off the air, there’s been a significant amount of disagreement, but to put it simply: John Costner and show creator Taylor Sheridan struggled to coordinate their filming schedules.
The talks about Kevin Costner’s reduced ability to film more “Yellowstone” started in February 2023, when it was disclosed that he wasn’t present as many days as before. Later in September 2023, during his divorce court hearings, it emerged that Costner had adjusted his shooting schedule for the four-part movie series “Horizon: An American Saga” to be part of the first installment of the fifth season. However, Costner mentioned that the scripts for the second part of Season 5 were not provided on time, which prevented him from filming them. He also stated that he thought he was entitled to payment for the season and hinted at potentially taking this issue to court.
As a dedicated fan, I’ve been eagerly waiting for an update on a possible return of Yellowstone. Back in April, Costner hinted at the possibility, expressing his desire by saying, “I’d love to be able to do it.” He reiterated this sentiment in June, stating, “I’d love to go back under the right circumstances – I think that all of us want.” However, later in the same month, it seemed like he had definitively ruled out a return, saying, “I’ve realized that I won’t be able to continue with Season 5B or beyond.
Is this the last season of “Yellowstone”? Isn’t there a spinoff with Matthew McConaughey coming?
Once more, the response indicates a series of private conversations. The initial chatter about the show concluding and embarking on a fresh phase coincided with the initial news of Costner departing. It was suggested that this would initiate a new expansion of the ‘Yellowstone’ universe, involving several characters from the original series, with Matthew McConaughey potentially taking on a leading role in these discussions.
Back in May 2023, Paramount Network revealed some major news: the critically acclaimed series “Yellowstone” is wrapping up, with its final episodes scheduled for release in November. What’s more exciting is that a spin-off series, currently unnamed, has been greenlit and will air on Paramount Network starting December.
By November 2023, there was an announcement made that the episodes would be delayed by a year. Additionally, they mentioned two spin-offs: one set in the past titled “1944” and another in the present day named “2024.
In August of 2024, the production changed its name from “2024” to “The Madison.” They also announced that Michelle Pfeiffer would be taking on a leading role. The plot revolves around a New York City family who have moved to the Madison River valley in central Montana.
Towards the end of that particular month, it was mentioned by EbMaster that discussions were taking place for a sixth season of “Yellowstone”, featuring Reilly and Hauser as the main characters. However, no official confirmation or approval (greenlight) has been given so far.
At the moment, two additional stories set within the “Yellowstone” world are being developed: “1923,” a prequel featuring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, has been greenlit for another season, and the spinoff titled “6666” is still under active production.
