Yellowstone fans “disappointed” by Marshals Episode 1 over major death

The new Yellowstone spinoff, Marshals, surprised viewers by killing off a major character in its first episode, and fans are expressing their disappointment.

Marshals is a follow-up to Taylor Sheridan’s series Yellowstone, and centers on Kayce Dutton’s work as a United States Marshal.

At the end of the season, Kayce, Monica, and their son Tate moved to the East Camp to start a new life.

One cast member wasn’t included in the initial announcements, and now the reason is clear. Be warned: spoilers follow…

Monica Dutton’s fate in Marshals

As a huge fan of Yellowstone, I’ve definitely picked up on some really unsettling stuff about Monica early in Season 1 of 1883. Kayce keeps having these awful nightmares when he’s alone, and he’s clearly struggling to take care of Tate, constantly saying how tough life is. It’s making me worry something terrible has happened to her, and it’s all very foreshadowing-y!

Wow, I was completely shocked when they revealed Monica had passed away – it turned out she’d been battling cancer caused by toxic waste on the Broken Rock reservation. It was a really heavy moment, and honestly, it allowed the showrunner, Spencer Hednut, to really tackle a serious and important issue.

Hudnut explained to EW that it was crucial to pay tribute to the character and use her death to raise awareness about the challenges facing Native American reservations.

He explained that her impact and personality will continue to be felt throughout the show. She was so integral to Kayce Dutton’s character that he’ll carry her with him as the story unfolds.

Luke Grimes was surprised by TV wife’s death

Luke Grimes was surprised to learn his character, Monica, would die. He told Entertainment Weekly he wasn’t expecting it at all when he found out, and he immediately felt a mix of emotions.

I was really upset when Kelsey couldn’t continue, because she’s a close friend and an incredibly talented actor – the best I’ve ever worked with. We’re very close, and I initially couldn’t picture the show going on without her. It just didn’t feel right; Kayce and Monica are a unit, inseparable really.

“But I also realized, well, there’s a big story there.”

Kayce’s intense grief will be a major factor in how the story with the Marshals unfolds. According to Grimes, someone experiencing that level of pain is unpredictable and capable of anything. While deeply sad, he felt it was a fitting and powerful direction for the plot.

Yellowstone fans aren’t happy with Monica’s death

Yellowstone fans on Reddit are upset with how the character Monica died in the first episode of the new season. They’ve been sharing their reactions and disappointment online.

Many viewers feel the show has gone too far with the tragedies faced by Kayce, with one commenting that he’s suffered an unbelievable amount of loss – his mother, father, both brothers, and a child, now his wife. They believe it’s simply too much for one character to endure.

Many viewers feel Kayce has suffered enough loss and hardship, believing the show has unfairly burdened him with a consistently difficult life, almost as if he’s being punished repeatedly.

Someone else commented, saying it seemed disappointing that Beth wasn’t with her brother and nephew after Monica’s death.

One viewer described the show as fairly predictable, saying it felt like a typical CBS crime drama with elements borrowed from the popular series Yellowstone to attract an audience.

Another simply states they are “Disappointed. I thought it would be better.”

Another viewer expressed disappointment, stating they shouldn’t have found out about Monica’s death – even though they suspected she wouldn’t return to the show – through Rainwater’s announcement.

You know, as a fan, I always thought the story would have been stronger if it had begun with Kayce and Tate running the ranch together. It would’ve been amazing to see them back at it, especially since that’s always been Kayce’s dream. Showing how much their lives had changed from that initial vision, and then introducing the new characters and problems, would’ve felt really natural. It just feels like a missed opportunity to highlight that original vision.

Honestly, I was really bummed about Monica’s death. It totally threw me for a loop and honestly made the whole ending of Yellowstone feel…empty. It especially messed with how I felt about Kayce’s journey. So much of what happened at the end just doesn’t hit the same way now that she’s gone, it feels like a lot of it was for nothing.

While not everyone disliked it, one fan actually thought the first episode was good, commenting that a lot of the criticism seemed to come before anyone had even seen the show.
