As a seasoned movie reviewer who’s seen more baseball games than I care to remember, let me tell you, the 2024 World Series between the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers is shaping up to be a grand spectacle indeed! The ad sales for Fox are already skyrocketing, with prices ranging from $450,000 to $500,000 for a 30-second spot in the first five games. That’s enough to make even Scrooge McDuck dive into his money bin!
Even though the World Series between the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers doesn’t begin until this coming Friday evening, Madison Avenue has already made a significant attempt to captivate the anticipated crowds for Major League Baseball’s premier event.
Mark Evans, executive vice president of ad sales for Fox Sports, announced that all fixed ad positions for the initial two games of the championship are already taken. This is a more favorable situation for the network compared to previous years before these specific games, as it hasn’t had such high demand in over ten years. Advertisers seeking to secure spots in the first two games of the Series will need to purchase inventory that would only become visible under certain unpredictable circumstances, such as a pitching change, extra innings, or other unexpected events.
Fox is asking for a price range of $450,000 to $500,000 per 30-second advertisement during the initial five games of the World Series. If additional games are needed (sixth or seventh), prices may increase accordingly.
This year, the network that’s been airing every World Series since 2001 seems to be in a stronger position than it has been for a while. Last year’s series between the Texas Rangers and Arizona Diamondbacks didn’t have as broad an appeal due to both teams being based in similar regions of the U.S. However, a matchup between the Yankees and Dodgers is likely to attract fans from across the country.
According to Evans, Fox had already noticed a surge in interest for baseball during the All-Star Game and the “upfront” sales market. However, with the Yankees and Dodgers making it to the Series, this has triggered an additional wave of inquiries. Not just the usual sports advertisers are inquiring now, but also other companies that don’t typically advertise in sports. These businesses might grab a few advertising spots because they want to reach a national audience.
At the MLB games, you’ll find usual sponsors like Capital One, Geico, Mastercard, but this year, movie studios are expected to join in as well. This is because they’ve been purchasing more advertising space to refill their lineup post Hollywood strikes. Additionally, pharmaceutical companies, insurance firms, and tech businesses will also be showcasing their ads during the event.
As the 2024 presidential election approaches, it’s anticipated that there will be an unconventional type of supporter for both the Harris and Trump campaigns. Reports suggest that they are likely to have some form of representation during the World Series, according to a source privy to the details.
