Yakuza TV Show Cast Explain Why They Didn't Play The Games

As a die-hard fan of the Yakuza series, I must admit that my heart skipped a beat when I heard about the live-action adaptation coming to Prime Video this fall. The prospect of seeing Kazuma Kiryu and Akira Nishikiyama brought to life by Ryoma Takeuchi and Kento Kaku was nothing short of exhilarating.

Amazon Prime Video enjoyed success earlier this year with the video game series Fallout, and now, in the fall, the streaming platform is hoping to replicate that success with Like a Dragon: Yakuza, a new live-action adaptation of the Yakuza: Like a Dragon game. Despite the fact that the show’s main actors, Ryoma Takeuchi and Kento Kaku, are associated with the series, they chose not to play the video game that served as inspiration for the program, and have provided their explanations for doing so.

Takeuchi shared with GamesRadar that while everyone around the world is familiar with these games, he himself hasn’t had a chance to play them. He expressed an interest in trying them out but was prevented by the creative team since they wanted the character in the script to approach things afresh and unexplored. That’s why Takeuchi chose not to engage in playing these games.

“I definitely knew the property very well, but I didn’t realize the franchise was this globally big. We decided we would make sure we would do our own version, relive the characters, take their spiritual elements, and embody them on our own. There was a clear line we wanted to draw, but everything on the bottom was respect.”

In this gaming series, Takeuchi will embody the role of Kazuma Kiryu, the main character, while Kaku assumes the part of Kazuma’s childhood friend, Akira Nishikiyama. The narrative delves into how Kazuma’s past experiences shape his current criminal activities and connections within the underworld.

Like a Dragon: Yakuza will premiere on Prime Video on October 24.
