The multiplayer game XDefiant has permanently shut down its servers. Its Executive Producer, who was instrumental in the game’s development, has chosen to exit the gaming industry after this closure.
Initially revealed in 2021, Ubisoft’s XDefiant generated a lot of excitement among FPS enthusiasts, being viewed as a potential rival to Call of Duty. This free-to-play arena shooter was creating positive buzz due to its emphasis on competitive 6v6 matches and its lack of skill-based matchmaking system.
Although the game had a successful debut in May 2024, the enthusiasm waned significantly over the subsequent months. In fact, by December 2024, it was officially announced that Ubisoft was halting further development, signaling its impending permanent closure.
On June 3rd, 2025, the servers for XDefiant were shut down, making it impossible for players to log in. Soon after, Executive Producer Mark Rubin disclosed some of the challenges the project encountered before announcing his departure from the video game industry.
Former COD dev Mark Rubin explains why XDefiant shut down
In a long post titled “A Regretful Day,” Rubin – the man behind Call of Duty 4, Modern Warfare 2, and Modern Warfare 3 – admitted that one reason for XDefiant’s demise was the scant marketing efforts following its release. However, this wasn’t the only hurdle; he also highlighted other difficulties the team encountered.
He clarified that while we faced other challenges too, we made sure to keep things clear. One significant hurdle was the technical debt stemming from a system not tailored for our tasks. Unfortunately, we lacked the necessary engineering personnel to rectify this issue.
Among the technical debts we faced was the persistent problem of network coding, which proved challenging for us to resolve due to the structure we had to work within.
Today is a somber day for enthusiasts of XDefiant and the dedicated developers who put in countless hours to bring this game to life. I’d like to express my gratitude to everyone who played it and those who championed it, whether you were a prominent content creator or simply a devoted fan. Each voice was significant.

I shared how our team was often resource-constrained, making it challenging for us to fully realize XDefiant’s potential in terms of the rich content necessary to maintain player engagement.
In simpler terms, “The content presented in Season 3 didn’t seem enough to me for a full launch. There were some fantastic features slated for Seasons 4 and 5 that would have made the game feel more complete at its initial release.
At the conclusion of his post, Rubin commended his dismissed development team from Ubisoft (who parted ways at the end of 2024), for crafting “exceptional maps” – among the finest ever designed for an arcade shooter. Lastly, when delving into his own plans, he disclosed that he won’t be pursuing a new role within the gaming industry.
From my perspective, I’ve chosen to prioritize spending quality time with my loved ones over my gaming career. So, I regret to inform you that you might not catch any future games credited to me.
I’m deeply invested in the video game development scene and wish there were others who could continue my mission of creating games that prioritize players, value their opinions, and show genuine respect. Here’s hoping someone takes up this banner and keeps pushing for quality, player-centric gaming experiences.
It’s exciting to know that several developers who contributed to XDefiant are now joining different teams. This means they could be working on fresh ventures quite quickly!
