XCOM Creator Is Ready To Return To The Franchise, If Firaxis Ever Decides To Call Him

The fate of XCOM is yet undecided, but should the series resurface, a seasoned player would relish another opportunity to join the fray. In a recent chat, Julian Gollop, the mastermind behind X-COM, expressed his wish to revisit XCOM in some form if given the chance, and he remains proud of his longstanding connection with it.

Gollop expressed to Eurogamer that he’s content being recognized as the XCOM developer. After all, XCOM was pivotal in his professional journey, and perhaps even laid some groundwork for strategy gaming during its time, although the real-time-strategy genre soon dominated the scene after its release.

Gollop playfully hinted that he was yet to receive a call from Sid Meier, Firaxis‘s boss, inviting him to collaborate on a new X-COM game. At the moment, however, he’s busy creating a real-time action-strategy game titled “Chip ‘n Clawz vs. the Brainiods.” In this game, you’ll collect resources, build an army, and even join your troops in combat on the battlefield. Expected release date is later this year.

XCOM’s journey began in 1994 with UFO: Enemy Unknown, also known as X-COM: UFO Defense internationally. Over the years, numerous games in this series came out, but it was Firaxis’ X-COM: Enemy Unknown and X-COM 2 that made significant waves critically during the 2010s. The latest additions to the series include X-COM: Chimera Squad from 2020 and X-COM Legends, a free-to-play game released in 2021.

In the meantime, Firaxis Games has been engaged in various other gaming projects, such as Marvel’s Midnight Suns, which was launched in 2022, and the more recent release of Sid Meier’s Civilization VI.
