Microsoft and Xbox unveiled their innovative AI model, named Muse, which stands as the first-ever World and Human Action Model (WHAM). The objective of Muse is to assist game studios by automatically generating gameplay during the development phase. Additionally, Microsoft hinted at the potential of this technology to revive games that have been unplayable for years due to being on outdated systems.
As a fan, I can share that this marvel was honed using the knowledge gained during the development of Ninja Theory’s now-inactive project, Bleeding Edge. Unfortunately, support for the game ceased in 2021 as the team shifted their focus towards fresh endeavors. Interestingly, Ninja Theory and Microsoft Research, both nestled in Cambridge, England, formed a partnership that facilitated this learning process. Specifically, Muse was trained using Bleeding Edge to better understand game physics and responses to player controller inputs.
As stated by Xbox, the tool known as Muse is utilized for brainstorming gameplay concepts. It’s currently being employed to create a real-time, playable AI model that’s trained on other in-house games developed by the company. Furthermore, Xbox hinted at the potential of Muse to revive older games that have become obsolete due to time and outdated hardware from their first-party collection, optimizing them in the process.
Furthermore, Microsoft (Xbox) stated that Muse would enable teams to experiment with fresh gameplay concepts during development, as well as introduce new content. They mentioned that it is the choice of their studios whether or not to utilize generative AI in their projects, based on their specific goals and visions. Moreover, they emphasized that AI won’t be a one-size-fits-all solution for every project.

The debate around AI continues as it stands today. A recent investigation revealed that the vast majority of video game development studios have integrated generative AI into their work, yet employees express apprehension regarding its potential effects on their jobs. The CEO of Electronic Arts (EA), Andrew Wilson, and Microsoft president Brad Smith predict that in the near future, AI will cause job displacement; however, they believe it will also open up new avenues in the long run. Notably, last year, Microsoft reduced its workforce by more than 2,500 employees in gaming-related positions. In addition, video game voice actors have recently gone on strike due to worries about AI technology.
