As a seasoned gamer who has navigated through countless console generations and digital marketplaces, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and frustration at the latest turn of events with Xbox’s foray into Android gaming. The promise of purchasing Xbox games directly from the comfort of my mobile device is tantalizingly close, yet the legal hurdles that stand in its way are as formidable as a level 9 boss in a classic RPG.

Back in October, Microsoft revealed an upcoming change for purchasing Xbox games – they would become available directly through the Xbox app on Android devices. Yet, due to a recent court decision, these plans have been temporarily put on hold.

According to Xbox President Sarah Bond, a U.S. judge has temporarily halted Microsoft’s plans to launch a new Xbox feature. Although the feature is prepared and ready for immediate release, Microsoft cannot do so until the court reaches a final verdict. In her words, “Our team has developed the functionality and it’s all set to go live as soon as the court makes its final decision.

The current situation can be traced back to a court ruling in the Epic v. Google case from 2024, where it was decided that Google must permit competing third-party app stores within Google Play. Epic Games’ Tim Sweeney played a leading role in advocating for this change as part of his ongoing fight against Google and its business strategies.

Initially, Google declared its intention to contest the ruling, and eventually, they managed to persuade a judge to postpone the verdict. The duration of this delay before the stay is lifted is yet uncertain.

Epic, responsible for the widely-acclaimed Fortnite, argued in court that Google unreasonably obstructs competitors when it comes to success in the market within the Google Play store. This advantage is significant for Microsoft since they can sell games directly to consumers through their own integrated store within the Xbox app. Additionally, this also means Microsoft could avoid paying a fee to Google.

Microsoft intends to establish a dedicated mobile game store, in addition to offering games within the Xbox app on Android devices. Instead of focusing on selling Xbox consoles to everyone, they are rebranding Xbox as a term encompassing any device that supports Xbox Game Pass.

Microsoft aims to boost Xbox Game Pass subscriptions as this helps them establish a consistent and ongoing income flow, which aligns with their focus on financial growth. Following the recent reductions in Xbox’s workforce (approximately 2,500 employees), Spencer justified these cuts by emphasizing their necessity within the capitalist system.
