Xbox Users Reportedly Play More Games Than PS5 Or Steam Players, And There’s One Big Reason Why

While more people may be playing on PlayStation 5 and PC right now, Xbox gamers actually play a wider variety of games. A recent report suggests this is thanks to the Xbox Game Pass subscription service.

According to data from Ampere Analytics, Xbox gamers played an average of nearly six different games in August 2025. This is a lot more than players on Steam (who averaged 4.5 games) and PlayStation 5 (3.7 games). Ampere believes this is because so many Xbox users subscribe to Game Pass, which lets them easily try out a wide variety of games, and this habit is now reflected in the data.

According to data from Ampere, Xbox players are currently playing fewer games overall than those on PlayStation 5 and Steam. While Xbox has historically seen lower playtime, August 2025 showed a significant difference. On average, Xbox players spent just 7.7 hours gaming, compared to 12.7 hours for PS5 players and 11.9 hours for Steam users.

These gaming patterns change depending on when new games are released. For example, the upcoming release of Black Ops 7 will likely shift how people play across different consoles, especially since it will be available on Xbox Game Pass. However, overall, we consistently see that Xbox players try out a wider variety of games thanks to Game Pass, even though they typically spend a bit less time gaming each month compared to players on other platforms.

The future of Xbox’s Game Pass is facing some scrutiny, despite Microsoft’s promise of record investment this year. Concerns are growing among game developers about the impact of subscription services on the industry. Industry veterans like Shawn Layden (formerly of PlayStation) have warned that these models can pressure developers, while leaders at Take-Two and former Xbox executives have questioned whether Game Pass is financially sustainable for game development and if it harms traditional game sales.
