Xbox Update Is Resetting Consoles To Factory Settings, But You’re Probably Not Affected

The new firmware upgrade for Xbox Series X|S gaming systems has been released, and it seems that some users are finding their consoles restored to their original factory configurations. However, chances are this doesn’t concern you directly.

The Xbox Insider program by Microsoft, open to all, allows users in the Alpha and Alpha Skip-Ahead levels early access to new features. However, it appears this newest update isn’t running as smoothly as expected, causing some issues. Keep in mind that Microsoft openly acknowledges the testing phase as unstable in the Xbox Insider terms, but this latest update stands out due to its impact.

Users have been noticing that their entire accounts are being deleted, with tech journalist Tom Warren of The Verge experiencing the same issue. This type of occurrence is typically associated with pre-launch software.

As a devoted fan, I too experienced the dreaded wipe on my VGC console. Earlier reports suggested that pre-installed games would be spared, but it seems like all other configurations were erased.

The recent Xbox Insider update aimed to rectify two problems: first, a glitch that made it seem like your profile was viewing someone else’s, and second, an issue preventing the console from recognizing Dolby Vision configurations properly. However, it appears that the rollout of this update didn’t go quite as expected, as some users have reported that their profiles are being deleted instead of the intended fix.

At the time of publication, the Xbox Insider’s social media account remains silent regarding the problems being reported by players concerning the recent update.

If you’re part of the Xbox Insider program and wish to withdraw, head over to the Xbox Insider Hub and hit “Leave Preview.” To permanently shut down your account, go to Settings then Manage account, and click on Close account.

It appears that the exact number of individuals enrolled in the Xbox Insider program isn’t publicly disclosed by Microsoft. However, it can be assumed that a minuscule fraction of all Xbox users belong to this group.
