According to Greg Zeschuk, one of the founders of BioWare, there was a strong possibility that the action role-playing game Jade Empire could have become another successful franchise on Xbox, had it not been for Microsoft’s narrow-minded guidance.
During a conversation on the My Perfect Console podcast, Zeschuk stated that Microsoft persuaded BioWare to launch Jade Empire towards the end of the original Xbox’s life. In his words, “That was the most foolish advice; absolutely brainless advice from them. The biggest blunder imaginable,” he elaborated.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but feel that Jade Empire should have graced the Xbox 360 during its launch instead of towards the end of the Xbox’s lifecycle. This strategic move could have significantly boosted its success in those early days of the new console.
Zeschuk shared that with additional development time and resources, Jade Empire could’ve been part of legendary series like Mass Effect and Dragon Age. Essentially, he suggested they needed six months more, an opportunity to release it as a launch title for the Xbox 360, and it would have become another successful franchise.
In April 2005, Jade Empire debuted on the first Xbox model, and the Xbox 360 followed its release in November of the same year. The last reported sales figure for this game was from July 2005, where it had reached over half a million copies sold, falling short of initial expectations.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but reminisce about the enchanting world of Jade Empire. Fortunately, it’s playable on Xbox One and Series X|S due to backwards compatibility. However, since the enhanced PC port in 2007 and an iOS version in 2016, no new installments have been released. Intriguingly, back in 2011, BioWare hinted at their desire to expand this universe further, but alas, any dreams of a sequel seemed to fade away over time.
