Xbox Layoffs Impacted Call Of Duty: Warzone Mobile And Warcraft Rumble Teams - Report

As a dedicated fan who has been following these legendary franchises for decades, I find myself deeply concerned by the recent layoffs at Microsoft, particularly those affecting the teams behind Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile and Warcraft Rumble. Having grown up with these iconic titles, it’s disheartening to see the teams responsible for their continued evolution facing reductions.

According to reports, Microsoft appears to be reducing staff members who were developing Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile and Warcraft Rumble, two mobile games from renowned franchises. These games were released within the last year, but it seems that the development teams behind them are being downsized.

The Game File team recently informed the two mobile development groups (which were among the September 12th large-scale layoffs at Xbox) about particular reductions in workforce. Microsoft, according to a staff memo obtained by IGN, dismissed approximately 650 employees, with the majority of these positions being from the corporate and support sectors of the company. It’s important to note that no studios were shut down or game projects canceled due to the Xbox layoffs.

After the initial launch, Warcraft Rumble is set to move into regular operation mode as per the game file. The specific impact on the mobile game remains unclear, but it will continue to be accessible. Launched in November 2023, Warcraft Rumble marked the franchise’s debut of a new game after nearly a decade.

Earlier this year in March, the mobile version of Call of Duty: Warzone was released, and it’s compatible with Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone. Some people saw it as a potential missing piece for the Call of Duty franchise, alongside Call of Duty: Mobile. Similar to Warcraft Rumble, Warzone Mobile is still ongoing, but its development team is being reduced, according to Game File.

As a gaming enthusiast, it seems like I’m once again caught in the wave of changes sweeping across Microsoft post their acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Back in January, Xbox announced the unfortunate layoff of 1,900 employees, and now, in May, they’ve decided to close down four studios, with Arkane Austin, the team behind Redfall, being one of them. It’s an interesting time for gaming, indeed!
