Xbox Is Trying To Save The Planet With This New Product

As an avid gamer with a deep-rooted passion for both technology and sustainability, I can’t help but be thrilled by Microsoft’s latest initiative. The new Sky Cipher Xbox controller, encased in eco-friendly packaging, is not just a testament to their commitment to reducing their carbon footprint, but also a step forward in the gaming industry as a whole.

Microsoft’s latest transparent Sky Cipher Xbox gamepad, designed to reduce its environmental impact, arrives encased in eco-friendly packaging.

The new controller’s packaging avoids single-use plastics found in typical Xbox controllers, instead providing a QR code for a digital user guide in place of a paper manual. This change, along with a smaller and lighter design (down by 22% and 21% respectively), results in a reduced environmental impact, as stated by Microsoft.

Microsoft hasn’t unveiled any pictures of the fresh packaging yet, but we can expect clarity shortly since the controller is set to launch on August 13 at a price point of $70.

In 2020, Microsoft expressed its intention to achieve a “carbon neutral” status by 2030, and by 2050, it aims to offset all the carbon emissions it has produced since its establishment in 1975. To contribute to this goal, in 2023, Microsoft declared that all Xbox consoles would be set to an energy-saving mode as a means to lessen the company’s environmental impact.

In 2019, Microsoft produced 825,000 Xbox consoles with a carbon-neutral footprint as part of an experimental project. Over twenty video game companies united to back an initiative called “Playing for the Planet,” which aimed to increase public understanding of climate change and encourage various eco-friendly changes to protect our planet. Specifically, Ubisoft ignited virtual forests in Riders Republic to generate awareness about this critical issue.
