Xbox Is Exploring Ad-Based And Cloud-Exclusive Game Pass Tiers - Report

As a long-time Xbox fan and avid gamer, I’m excited about the recent reports of new tiers for Xbox Game Pass. Microsoft is truly listening to the needs of its diverse customer base, and these new options are a testament to that.

According to reports, Microsoft is considering various new options for Xbox Game Pass, such as ad-supported and cloud-only versions. There’s even a possibility that the old Game Pass family plan may return.

Based on Windows Central’s report, Microsoft is developing a more affordable cloud-only version of Xbox Game Pass for individuals not desiring an Xbox console. This edition would provide “double dip” benefits to subscribers, enabling them to play games via the cloud and own digital copies.

Microsoft is considering an advertising-supported version of Game Pass instead of actively developing it. This alternative would cater to users unwilling to pay for the service and aim to provide them with game access through ads.

In 2022, Microsoft unveiled plans to trial its Game Pass Friends & Family Plan in countries such as Ireland and Colombia. This subscription allowed for one Game Pass Ultimate membership to be shared among up to four individuals. However, after running the test for over a year, Microsoft decided to discontinue the preview, leaving the plan’s status uncertain. Nonetheless, rumors suggest that the Friends & Family Plan is not completely gone and may resurface in some form.

Microsoft has introduced some updates to Xbox Game Pass, amongst which is the introduction of a new tier named Xbox Game Pass Standard, and an increase in the prices of other tiers like Ultimate and Core. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has expressed concern over these modifications, viewing the new tier as a downgraded version, alleging that Microsoft is leveraging its market dominance following the acquisition of Activision Blizzard to hike up prices.
