Xbox Games On PS5 Is A Win For PlayStation Owners, Former Sony Boss Says

Shuhei Yoshida, the former head of PlayStation, has spoken out about Microsoft’s recent approach in which they release some of their exclusive games on competing platforms like the PS5. This move, as per Yoshida, is primarily driven by Microsoft’s goal to generate revenue and expand the reach of their games. Interestingly, Yoshida also believes that this strategy benefits PlayStation 5 owners as well.

He stated during an interview on the Sacred Symbols podcast, as reported by VGC, that it’s advantageous for PlayStation users because they couldn’t play those games previously.

As a gaming enthusiast and formerly in charge of Sony’s first-party game production pipeline, I can attest to the daunting prospect of our platform becoming a minority in the market. This situation would make it nearly impossible for us to sustain first-party development, as the most talented creators would be drawn towards platforms with a larger user base.

He noted: “They aren’t only creative individuals, they are entrepreneurs too; they aim for their games to reach a wide market as well.

Among the major console manufacturers, Microsoft trails behind both Sony (PS5) and Nintendo (Switch), with sales of the Series X|S falling short compared to their counterparts. In a recent statement, Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, shared that he is no longer focusing on persuading PS5 users to switch to Xbox but rather aims to make more of Microsoft’s exclusive games available on PlayStation 5 to cater to the existing user base.

For quite some time, Microsoft has been adopting a strategy that’s less tied to specific platforms, but it’s only lately that they’ve started launching an increasing number of their games on PS5 and Nintendo Switch. On the other hand, Sony persists in prioritizing exclusives for its own systems, while also expanding its offerings on PC, even releasing day-and-date titles for live-service games there.

One of the upcoming major games for Xbox that will also be released on PlayStation is Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, set to arrive on PS5 this spring, following its initial release on Xbox in 2024. Subsequently, Doom: The Dark Ages will hit Xbox, PlayStation, and PC in May, simultaneously launching on all platforms.

The role-playing game “Avowed” by Microsoft’s studio Obsidian was released on the 18th of February, however, as of yet, it hasn’t been confirmed that it will be available on any platforms apart from Xbox and PC.
