A representative from Virtuos expressed an opinion about the potential Nintendo Switch 2, suggesting that any game designed for the Xbox Series S could feasibly be adapted for the versatile console.
Back in April when Nintendo unveiled the Switch 2, there was much curiosity about just how potent its next-generation hybrid gaming device would turn out to be.
In practical tests, some people argue that its speed is similar to the PlayStation 4, while others suggest it’s more akin to the Xbox Series S due to the implementation of Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) for frame generation.
A programmer discussed potential capabilities of the Switch 2 during a conversation with wccftech on July 7, hinting at its possible compatibility with Xbox Series S games.
“Any” Xbox Series S game can be ported to Switch 2
As per Eoin O’Grady, Technical Director at Virtuos-owned Black Shamrock, it shouldn’t be too challenging to adapt games that run at 60 frames per second on the Xbox Series S for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
In a comparison, someone mentions that the graphics card in Nintendo’s latest handheld system is “slightly behind” the performance level of the Xbox Series S, but they point out that the Xbox lacks DLSS technology, which utilizes artificial intelligence to enhance game performance. However, the upcoming Switch 2 does support DLSS, making its GPU more comparable to the one in the Xbox Series S when considering this specific feature.
According to O’Grady, regarding its processor, the hybrid console resembles more the PlayStation 4. Despite a potential difference in CPUs, the developer suggests that games for the Series S could potentially be adapted for the Switch 2.
The source indicated to wccftech that any game running at 60 frames per second (FPS) on the Series S console should effortlessly transition to the Switch 2, and even a 30 FPS game bound by the GPU of the Series S should adapt smoothly. However, games with intricate physics, animations, or CPU-intensive aspects may encounter additional hurdles when aiming for 30 or 60 FPS during the porting process, potentially necessitating extra optimization efforts.
Black Shamrock has been involved in developing several games that could potentially be adapted for the Nintendo Switch 2, such as Marvel’s Midnight Suns, The Outer Worlds, and the popular Xbox title Grounded.
Just a short while later, Nvidia disclosed that the Switch 2 incorporates not just their DLSS frame generation technology, but additionally offers ray tracing and adaptive refresh rate capabilities when operated in handheld mode.
