Xbox 360 Just Got A New Update, Really

It has been discovered that the Xbox 360, which was initially launched in 2005, has received a fresh system update recently. According to Reddit user trackwalker, they turned on their Xbox 360 and noticed that the dashboard had been updated.

It appears there have been some changes in the game thumbnail images on Reddit, as reported by trackwalker’s post. Additionally, it seems that the dashboard now showcases ads for the Xbox Series X|S consoles, inviting users to upgrade and enjoy superior next-gen performance.

The official closure of the Xbox 360 store took place in July 2024, causing the disappearance of hundreds of games and related content. TrueAchievements noted that along with the store tiles being removed, the dashboard lost its appeal, appearing rather unattractive or outdated.

Games designed for the Xbox 360 (and original Xbox) that are compatible with backward compatibility can still be purchased on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox.com. However, whether you can play these games online with others is dependent upon the decisions of individual publishers and developers for Xbox 360 titles; this aspect was not impacted by the closure of the store.

The peak of Xbox’s success was undoubtedly the Xbox 360 era, as it sold over 80 million units worldwide. However, both the Xbox One (launched in 2013) and the Xbox Series X|S seem to have struggled in comparison, with lower sales figures. In an interesting turn of events, Microsoft is currently working on a new home console in collaboration with AMD, while also exploring the creation of branded handheld devices such as the upcoming Xbox ROG Ally. Furthermore, Microsoft has joined forces with Meta for the development of an Xbox-branded VR headset.
