It appears that the platform previously known as Twitter is planning to eliminate the Direct Messaging (DM) function, based on what a software engineer has shared. Nevertheless, whispers suggest that a fresh feature named X Chat might be introduced instead.
On X’s platform, Warunek announced on April 16 that a significant shift is coming regarding private communication for users, as the current Direct Messages (DMs) will be phased out soon.
No, not like request messages but like the whole entire DM’s will be gone soon

Warunek stated that the question pertained to the message request feature, however, he mentioned that the entire Direct Message (DM) functionality as a whole is set to be discontinued.
XChat could replace DMs
It seems the modification is linked to a larger strategy aimed at transforming X into a comprehensive, one-stop app, which is a concept that Elon Musk, its owner, has been advocating for.
It appears that instead of Direct Messages (DMs), users might soon get access to a newly-disclosed feature named “XChat”, as suggested by recent discoveries made by app investigators.
While it’s not confirmed yet, images posted by nima_owji suggest a new chat feature titled “XChat” might be introduced. If verified, this could potentially supersede the current Messages section within the app.

X news account XDaily listed out features of XChat as follows:
- Full encryption on DMs
- Ability to send files like PDFs
- Vanishing mode
- Undo “read” status on messages
- Delete messages for all, not just yourself
- Voice messages planned for after launch
This update follows Elon Musk’s previous statement that he would eventually stop using his personal phone number for calls and messages, instead opting to use X for such communication.
In a few months, I will discontinue my phone number and only use X for texts and audio/video calls
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) February 9, 2024
Additionally, it fits with his goal to transform X into an all-encompassing application, often referred to as a ‘super app.’ This type of app might offer services such as payments, media sharing, and sophisticated AI capabilities among others.
In March, Elon technically transferred X to another corporation that he himself controls, in a transaction valued at around $33 billion.
