X has taken away the “Dim” display setting on its website. This option provided a blue-toned appearance, falling between the bright “Default” mode and the dark “Lights out” mode.
The Dim theme, originally called Night Mode when it launched in 2016, provides a gentler, bluish-gray background. It was later renamed in 2019.
As of February 12th, the Dim theme is no longer available on the web. However, it’s still available as an option within the settings of our Android and iOS apps.
X explains Dim removal
Nikita Bier, the Head of Product, addressed user concerns about Dim mode on February 12th after receiving feedback on the platform.
Currently, our system only supports up to two colors, according to Bier. The team is also considering making the website’s black background lighter based on user feedback, but they haven’t announced when this change might happen.
Currently, our system only supports up to two colors. We’ve heard your feedback about the dark black on the website and are exploring options to make it lighter.

Okay, so the explanation about why we can’t have a third color option in 2026 is seriously confusing people – myself included! A lot of us are wondering how a big platform in the future can’t handle something like that. Plus, a lot of players are worried about staring at pure black OLED screens for long periods, especially at night. It sounds like it could really strain your eyes when you’re just browsing around.
This change wasn’t a surprise. After buying the company, Elon Musk had previously announced plans to get rid of Dim. He also considered removing Light mode at the same time, but he brought that plan back after users complained.
Many users requested we continue offering a light mode, and we’ve listened! Light mode will remain available, but dark mode will now be the default. We’re also removing the ‘dim’ option.

Currently, this update only affects the website. However, some users have found that browser extensions or custom settings can bring back a similar look and feel.
While it hasn’t been officially confirmed, the recent web update hints that the developers might still simplify the user interface on mobile, potentially by removing Dim.
