Yesterday, countless individuals found themselves mesmerized for extended periods, gazing at chairs. This wasn’t a widespread psychological phenomenon similar to the Dance of Death in 1518 or the slime craze of 2018, where everyone got caught up in a shared obsession.
Indeed, this event wasn’t just any ordinary gathering, but rather a joyous occasion marking the start of production for the new superhero blockbuster, Avengers: Doomsday. Furthermore, the chairs weren’t merely random merchandise; they served as an innovative method to unveil the 26 (and more) stars featured in the forthcoming Marvel film.
Marvel has gathered a stellar lineup of actors for their upcoming project against Doctor Doom, featuring returning stars like Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Simu Liu, and others. Additionally, the cast of the Fantastic Four – Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach – are all set to join the fray.
Interestingly enough, one of the highlights was learning that some characters from the Fox X-Men series who were once familiar to us will be reprising their roles. This includes actors like Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden, among others.
To me, my X-Men
It’s quite thrilling, but might be disappointing for those who believed that Deadpool and Wolverine marked the end of the Fox universe. Regrettably, I have some unfortunate news: many of the characters you eagerly anticipate seeing again may meet their demise… or at least most of them will, to some extent.
What makes me think this is the case? I’ve got extensive knowledge about comic books and movie production, which isn’t always pleasant, but two facts lead me to believe that the X-Men won’t be around for much longer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Initially, having a cast of 26 actors might not be engaging. Such a big cast could lead to a storyline that lacks focus, becoming overly scattered and struggling to resonate with viewers.
Indeed, it’s true that Avengers: Endgame featured numerous heroes, however, many of these characters appeared primarily during the climactic scene, essentially making significant but brief appearances, or as one might say, they had more of a cameo role rather than a prominent one throughout the film.
Considering this perspective, I anticipate that the expanded X-Men team will play a comparable part in Doomsday, featuring a major action sequence primarily. This is where familiarity with comic books becomes crucial.
Everything dies
Indeed, when writer Jonathan Hickman was preparing for Secret Wars in 2015, he wrote a prelude story titled Time Runs Out. In this somber narrative, Earth-616 and Earth-1610 literally crashed into each other as the Multiverse gradually disappeared, leading to universal death.
As the two celestial bodies approached, champions from both realms engaged in desperate struggles to prevent their ailing planets from perishing. Their method of choice, unfortunately, involved clashing with one another. The outcome was grim and fruitless, culminating in an epic confrontation between superheroes that left both sides severely depleted.
Instead of detailing the specific methods our heroes used to save the day (since they didn’t), I’ll hint that Doomsday might follow a comparable scenario in its climax. Regrettably, it seems that Fox’s X-Men universe has been positioned as a parallel for Earth-1610 in this unfolding tragic storyline.
It seems likely that the final day, or Doomsday, will culminate in an epic confrontation between the X-Men and Avengers we’re fond of, resulting in the demise of most of Marvel’s cherished mutants (alongside some exceptional non-mutant heroes). This mortality I refer to is not Stan Lee’s.
Although it might seem unusual or unpleasant, destroying the Avengers contributed to making Infinity War and Endgame become the most successful Marvel films to date. This suggests that such tragic events can effectively attract audiences.
