The X-Men are joining the Avengers this fall in a new movie, Avengers: Doomsday. One of the actors who played an X-Men character in the early 2000s will share more about their experience with the franchise.
Alan Cumming recently spoke with People magazine about his experience playing Nightcrawler in the X-Men films. He recalled joining the Marvel universe with X2: X-Men United in 2003 and noted that reuniting with his castmates on Avengers: Doomsday – over twenty years later – involved sharing experiences of difficult moments from their first film together. Cumming also mentioned that due to the separate nature of filming, he hadn’t been able to reconnect with everyone from the original cast.
He explained that the cast had maintained a close relationship over the years, describing it as a modern approach to staying connected. He’s friendly with Ian McKellan and has seen Rebecca Romijn and Patrick Stewart often, as well as Jimmy Marsden. He believes they bonded through the shared, intense experience of making the film and that’s why they’ve remained in touch. This upcoming role in Avengers: Doomsday will mark the second time Cumming has played the character Kurt Wagner.
Throughout the current phase of Marvel movies (known as the Multiverse Saga), references to the X-Men films formerly owned by Fox have been appearing. This includes using the famous X-Men theme song in several projects and bringing back familiar actors like Patrick Stewart and Kelsey Grammer, who will reprise their roles as Professor X and Beast in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday film. Hugh Jackman also returned as a different version of Wolverine in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine, though it’s not yet certain if he’ll be in Doomsday.
The upcoming movie, Avengers: Doomsday, will unite Earth’s heroes – the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men – to face a threat that spans the multiverse. A key player will be Doctor Doom, and in a surprising move, Robert Downey Jr., who famously played Iron Man in earlier Marvel films, will portray Doctor Doom in this installment and will continue in the role for Avengers: Secret Wars.
It’s currently unknown if the X-Men will appear in the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars movie. Marvel Studios hasn’t shared much about the cast beyond confirming Doctor Doom (played by Downey Jr.) and the main characters from The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Still, some actors have hinted at their return for the 2027 film, including Simu Liu and Letitia Wright, who will reprise their roles as Shang-Chi and Black Panther.
With Marvel Studios preparing to introduce a new version of the X-Men and director Jake Schreier at the helm, it’s likely some of the original X-Men actors will reprise their roles one last time in Avengers: Secret Wars following Avengers: Doomsday. This 2027 film will probably be the final appearance for many of these beloved Marvel characters before the MCU introduces a fresh take on them.
You can now find X2: X-Men United on DVD, Blu-ray, and streaming services like Disney+ (in the US). A new movie, Avengers: Doomsday, which includes characters like Professor X, Cyclops, and Mystique, as well as Beast from X-Men: The Last Stand, will be released in theaters on December 18th.
